Replace the drain plug with every oil change? What? Why?
Doesn't sound correct to me either. Plastic plug, okay. Crush washer/gasket, okay. But the whole steel plug? I need to see some official service info on this to believe it's accurate.

Filling a horizontally mounted filter just makes a mess when installing it. :)
Ahhh, for some reason I thought it was mounted vertically. Makes more sense now. The 2.5l motor in my son's Ranger mounts horizontally too but I still fill the filter about 3/4 of the way before installing it. If you're quick enough it won't make a mess. 😁

Love that stripe. (y)
Ditto! It reminds me of the old Boss Bronco concept, which is probably what they were paying homage to.

If you need to know all those steps from the video, please do not attempt your first oil change with proper supervision. rofl.

That filter location is enough to push me to order a V6 lol

So cranking the engine for 8 seconds without firing is going to be better for the motor then just firing it up....

Absolutely, yes. Lower rotational RPM and less compressive forces on the bearings. Will it make any real world difference? Probably not. ;)

Nice video, but not really useful for the average Joe who changes his oil in the driveway without a lift.

Yeah I've been doing it all wrong for years.! Actually he knew, making the video, that he was going to lose it in the drain tank so it appeared that it was planned.!! LOL.! Good video though, I learned a little.!

Cranking the engine after an oil change to build pressure is great, but not filling the filter with oil first seems like a terrible idea. Unless I'm missing something here, you're pumping air through the oil galleys until the filter media is saturated and the canister fills up. It seems like he's "saving" time at the expense of unnecessary potential engine wear. Why not fill the filter and flat foot crank?
The oil filter is horizontal; it will make a mess trying to install a preloaded filter. Guarantee you the professional mechanic at the dealership or independent shop does not preload the filter.

And he doesn't use a torque wrench to tighten the plug.

I'm glad you asked, because I know that answer. That wrench, son, is a Snap-on 3/8" drive TechAngle flex-head. Model # ATECH2F12VH, only $650 from your friendly Snap-on dealer.:geek:

Well . . . I can't speak for everyone out there, but at my shop we always pre-filled the vertical filters and used a torque wrench on any plastic or aluminum pan. (y)

Agree. I’ve never replaced a drain plug unless stripped or damaged in some way.

Which is exactly why I do as much of my own maintenance as possible and I still pre-fill horizontally mounted oil filters, just not filled to the top. I'd rather risk spilling a few drops of oil than scuffing bearings.
