Fellow Bronco Owners; If you drop CBRS (Citizens Band Radio Service) and go with GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) you'll need an FCC license to be legal. The fee is only $35 and good for 10 year. Best intro to GMRS is; https://mygmrs.com/

CB is limited to 5W while GMRS is maxed at 50W

Handi Talkie (Walkie Talkie) Low Entry Point https://baofengtech.com/product/gmrs-v2/

So the GMRS license is just a paper and 35.00 drill. Ham is much more taxing with test I think. I got my GMRS so sweet! Took 24 hours to get my call sign and license. Don’t ask me what it is., LOL not memorized yet.

Around here GMRS is used by most of the off road people.
Also GMRS can talk to an FRS radio and and FRS radio can talk to a GMRS radio. No license needed for FRS. FRS does have a lower max transmit power then GMRS.

The Ability to talk between FRS and GMRS is very handy if you are in a group that is off roading and you have your license and GMRS radio the people with no license can use a FRS radio and still hear and talk to you.

I have a GMRS license but I got it before the price was dropped to only 35$

There is also MURS radios that don't need a license but not many people have or use them.
900 Mhz license free business radios are out there too but cost more and have fewer options.

Most people doing off road radio communication would be best off with GMRS. More power, lots of options in radios, lots of people in the off road community to talk to that already have these. The people who dont want to spend the money for GMRS and get very cheep frs radios and not be left out.

Radio nazis already. Nothing wrong with being legal. I bet you never go over the speed limit and are 100% accurate on your taxes. Just being a wise ass here, no offense meant. Off roaders and desert racers have been using business bands on VHF radios for many decades, as well as boaters on marine channels on VHF with no licenses. Business band is different from HAM bands, and we don't use HAM frequencies. If your group gets Baofeng radios and don't use the HAM frequencies, there are no issues. We all use VHF, both hard mount and handheld.

Good info on licensing for those who use GMRS.

Unless you outed your self they would never know on the GMRS, because it uses the FRS channels you could be using an frs radio and no license needed. And from just hearing people talk on a radio you cant tell if it is FRS or GMRS.

The GMRS license covers your family, so one license and many people could be legally talking.
And to listen to a radio of any type you don't need a license.

The point is for off roading or even just traveling in a group, a radio can be very useful and add to the fun with being able to talk between vehicles.

So what ever way you do it, having a radio around is good idea.

Still. What’s the point of requiring a license? Can someone do damage if they use a radio incorrectly?
