These BFG AT T/A KO2's I just grabbed for my 79, have under 600 miles and measure out exactly what they are supposed too, 34.5. And to OP, this is how you measure a tire if you want it highly accurate.

Has to be to absolute crown to crown, 90 degrees to tire face, full inflation (and obviously no weight on it, which I realize one of your pics at least, was spare). Obviously not the same tire (or even brand), but that would suck if they are making them even smaller than just last year.

Now measure it under the weight of the vehicle, which is what really matters when it comes to clearance off road, speedometer calibration, etc.

Hey guys - just getting into off roading…. Got my FE 3 weeks ago… im looking for a spare tire cover and noticed that Ford only has “fits 32 inch”. I then went outside to measure the tire diameter and it’s 32 inches! Am i missing something here??? How are 35 inch tires not anything but 35 inches? Im not at all disappointed w the size/appearance- the look MASSIVE. But why would they call them 35 inches? And furthermore, make it even more confusing by listing the tire cover based on the actual diameter? Really appreciate any insight here

My insight.
This is a two: 2
This is a three: 3
This is a four: 4

Usually when men lie about size, the embellishment is made larger than what the tape actually reads., not smaller. Like a guy exaggerating the size of a fish he caught, or the size of his………uh em, appendage to his girlfriend (this may in fact be the single most common reason that women are historically poor at estimating distances and measurements). None the less, I feel this measuring SNAFU has somehow violated some sort of Man Code. Where are the admins when you really need them?…..assuming the admins are men.

Yeah, we all get that rubber tires, full of air, compress under weight, what is your point?

My post was about an equivalent tire type/size that measures out to manufacture spec, IF you measure it how the manufacturer does. Vs this thread title, which seems more and more like BS.

I bet that TFL Defender that got stranded on the trail in Colorado wishes it had 1-pineapple sidewalls.

315/70/17
Let's do the math....
70% of 315 is 220.5mm. This is your sidewall.
220.5mm is 8.8 inches.
8.8" X 2 is 17.6"
Add to this the rim size of 17" is
34.6"
Therefore 35" tire.
Thank you so much!! I knew it was because these where 315's. Not 35"s. But I had no idea how to figure it out. Thanks for teaching. I suppose I could've googled it ;)

Measure the circumference and do the math. Either wrap around the spare with a string or.something. or chalk mark somewhere on the tread and roll it then measure.

It's like a 2x4 measure one of those and it is neither 2 or 4
They call them "Dimensional" 2 x 4s. More like delusional 2 x 4s... Back in the day, they started out at 2x4, but after kiln drying were somewhat less than that. Now they don't even pretend...

Are you Canadian?? Lol
I doubt it - most of us can work in both systems and will tell you that's 34.4" diameter if you believe the nominal measurements given.
