Ford Motor blew away Wall Street expectations as well as the company’s forecasted earnings for the third quarter on stronger-than-expected demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s how Ford performed versus what Wall Street expected, based on average analysts’ estimates compiled by Refinitiv.

  • Adjusted EPS: 65 cents vs 19 cents expected, according to Refinitiv
  • Automotive revenue: $34.71 billion vs $33.51 billion expected, according to Refinitiv

My takeaways as a shareholder:

Ford Credit issued A LOT of loans during COVID. Overseas manufacturing is going to continue to grow and US workforce will continue to be "restructured". Ending the sale of sedans was a smart move considering you can get similar MPG by launching hybrid & electric SUVs and trucks. All of the costs of launching Bronco and Mustang Mach-E will be reported at the end of this quarter, that amount will drive targets for Bronco sales to increase EBIT.

The overall sales of the full size Bronco, while important, are not critical. Anything over 3% of Jeep's US Wrangler market share in 21-22 will be considered a success financially. Ford will probably report the Bronco Sport combined with Bronco and report that share against Jeep's. A Hybrid Bronco will mean Europeans might balk a little less at the 25% import tariff.
