I just don't see the Explorer as large SUV at all. Yes an SUV vs crossover, but not sure it's that big of a difference than a Sport.
I'm having trouble seeing how someone cross shops a Bronco Sport with an Explorer. I find it much more realistic to cross shop the Sport with an Escape however.

The Bronco and Explorer aren't completely different, and may share markets. The Explorer is three inches longer (wheelbase), head room is the same, leg room is the same, hip room is the same, shoulder room is only slightly better in the Explorer. Curb weight is within a couple hundred pounds.

The Explorer offers a third row, about 10 inches in additional overall length, so it's a Bronco-E (Extended) with significantly better towing.

They will both be driven by the same market, and they will be driven in the same places; save the 3% - 5% that actually take their Bronco on rougher trails.

They are the same vehicle, but marketed differently; however, the market is merging between the two.

Wheelbase:
Bronco Sport 105.1" <-- Clickable link to the specs page
Explorer 119.1" <--- link to specs

Overall Length:
Bronco Sport 172.7 in.
Explorer 198.8 in. <- O.O way more than 10 inches. ~.~

The Explorer is over two feet longer than the Bronco Sport. 26.1 inches longer.

While the segments may overlap, I think there is going to be some niche marketing for the Explorer.

However, they are far from the same vehicle. Even though they will both have 4x4, the interior comfort and capabilities will be different in key ways.

The Explorer may be taking the place of the Expedition as the new "Family Travel" vehicle. Being able to tow and haul a lot of passengers.

Maybe this is Ford's way of saying that we're all getting Timberlines!

The Bronco was replaced by the Explorer.
Sounds like Ford has an internal pool running on who will win and prove the original decision to drop the Bronco correct. I hope that the Bronco and Explorer can coexist in separate market spaces.

Memo to Ford:
It's Bronco vs Wrangler, not Explorer.
It's Bronco vs Outback, not Explorer.

Maybe they'll get the memo.

On the day day we find out MAP is about to go on a 2 week shut-down, Ford has announced Explore will compete against the Bronco Sport. Feels like they are spreading their models thin vs consolidating. Why release the Sport and confuse the public about the Bronco if they were going with a 4 wheel Explorer? https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/05/for...erline-as-it-expands-off-road-suv-lineup.html

Explorer is a much bigger vehicle than a Bronco sport. Built more for families. Bronco Sports are built for mountain bikers on a smaller budget lol. The Explorer Timberline is built for families that want to take the family off the road occasionally. Its not nearly competing with the Sport. You could argue it is competing with the Bronco, but even then the Bronco is much more capable than this Explorer Timberline.

Reading these comments makes me believe most of you have never seen a Sport in person/driven one. They are VASTLY different in size both exterior and interior.

Its like saying that CR-V shoppers are the same as Pilot shoppers ...

Little difference either way, bunch of cute Utes with outdoorsy names appealing to the REI crowd isn’t much ta-do in the word of BOF (real)SUV off-roaders.

Also!

Considering the sedan is a dying breed you're going to see a lot more crossover options across the board. There is a BIG segment of buyers looking for that go everywhere (the cottage )/ active lifestyle vehicles.

Take the ADV motorcycle segment too, it is BLOWING up with interest for 450-600lb dirt bikes :ROFLMAO: I myself had to jump on the bandwagon 🤪

I don't really see this competing against the Bronco Sport, but more with the Bronco. Its not that much bigger. The tow rating is higher, I know a lot of people want to tow something bigger. They both use the same 2.3 engine, but the Explorer has 300 hp vs 270 hp. Maybe the Explorer might check more boxes for some than the Bronco.
