How and why did the Jeep owner even attempt something like that?

I guess sitting on the edge of death is fun?
You wouldn’t understand.

Jeepers got him out without problems. Turned into a recovery class.

Is there really no recoil blanket on that line? It's probably synthetic, but my understanding is you still want something to attenuate the line "snap" if it breaks.

@Mattwings Ok, with synthetic line if it breaks it drops straight down. Actually it’s non eventful, simply drops straight down like spaghetti. Synthetic is the way to go, lightweight but more expensive.

@wvmtneer
@BHShaman
And how you guys can tell from a still photo that a winch is actually pulling the vehicle is beyond me. That is them setting up.

Anything else I can help you guys with?

There is a straight line from a winch to the stuck Jeep, so very little slack if any. See also: the other two straight lines to the back of that Jeep.

Gravity was just waiting to turn that into a shitshow and I almost wish it had, without causing personal injuries, so this might serve as a lesson to other idiots instead of reaffirming their dumb decisions or giving what brain cells they bother using a safety net justification for risky behavior.
