I wondered why a Wrangler is rated at 5500 lbs or so in Europe but 3500 lbs in the U.S. even with the same specs.

This article explains it pretty well. You can get some advice on how to tow safely. There are a few basic rules in the article. One of the most important is speed. It's not a short read but well worth it to understand the whole tow rating thing.

Yeah, if you do much driving in europe you will quickly notice how slow the 'caravans' are moving on the highway. Thankfully they stick to the far right lane and religiously obey the speed limit (e.g. 80kmh sticker) the have displayed on the trailer.

However, in the 'states I don't think they could enforce people pulling a trailer to stick to the right and/or stay below 60mph. So probably for the best we have conservative tow ratings so we don't have jackknifed mini houses towed by Hyundais tumbling down the freeway.

I found it in the wayback machine. Kinja has blowed up the page forever.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but that is a great read. I've wondered the same since I had my '19 JLUR and it was only rated at 3500 but would be rated at 5000 or something in Europe.
