has anyone mounted an awning and/or ski racks to an aftermarket half rack on a 4 door?

Considering putting a half rack on my 4 door, but wanted to see if what I had in mind for it had already been done first.

Bonus points for photos.

Also wondering what people are using for a hitch mounted ski rack. Picked up a just just pivot for my cargo carrier and was planning on getting a hitch mount ski rack, but would love to see photos of options. Every Yakima rack I find for sale with the ski adapter seems to be a swing out, and mounting a swing out bike rack on a swing out hitch is ridiculous

X-Rack has some great Hitch mounted Ski carriers. The wing system can hold 2-3 rows of skis or snow boards, it can also be added to a cargo rack for more carrying capabilities. In the summer it can hold off road gear or fishing gear. If you have the swing out, you can use the 32" fixed wing post and 2 add on wings. I added some photos of what else you can do with this type of carrier.

Let me know if you have any questions.

or you can use this Flex wing XL and you don't need your swing out. It will clear the spare tire and It tilts down to open the tailgate. I prefer the swing out which is what I use on my Bronco.

That’s pretty slick, I hadn’t seen these. I’ll have to look into them for sure

I have a Hooke Road half rack with Yakima ski/snowboard racks. Not sure the exact model of the Yakima rack, but I bought it new in 2014 if that helps. This is the best (and only) pic I have:

Don’t know if it helps, but here is my Thule ski box. It fits the factory rack on the shortest setting, so that might work on a “half rack”. I can make measurements if you want, but it mounts in a surprisingly small area.

Nice! I was considering that rack. Do the skis hang off a considerable way or are there any issues with the racks being closer together?

If you have measurements of the distance between the two mounting points that would be awesome

I have snowboards, so I would say they are a bit shorter, but I might be thinking about the 90s and I think these days skis are a little shorter and wider than they used to be. But I don’t have any issues with the rack being as close together as they are.

And I think my board is a 167

The model I have is by Thule and it is the Pulse Alpine. It is Thule’s longest box, it fits up to 210cm skis, so my Nordic skis fit easy. My daily driver at the resort is a 191 Billy Goat by ON3P. Those fit too.

The fit is very adjustable, I just went and measured it and you can mount it as short together as 24 inches (my measurement, Thule website says 23.85 inches…)

Seems whatever “half rack” you are looking at is over 24 inches ??

Its on sale right now at REI, that’s a good price, cheaper than I paid.

A box is the way to go. Also watch REI warehouse sales. A lot of people “buy to rent” these boxes - they use them for a trip and return them. At one point the Seattle flagship store had racks of the, and liquidate them at warehouse sales.

I’m on a snowboard but my wife and father in law who likes to go with us both ski, so I need to carry a mix. Appreciate the feedback!

My skis always go inside. Road grit is not a great thing for bindings or race tuned skis.
That would be ideal, but won’t work with the amount of people and gear.

Thanks for the details, I didn’t think a box would be mountable on that close of rails. I’ll definitely look into this, it would be nice to keep them covered. I’ll check the rei warehouse out too Durangatan.

And you're still married to her?!?! ;)

I kid, I kid... I've told my family they can ski if they want to, but they have to at least try snowboarding.
