Hey guys,

I know a lot of OBX guys have discussed upgrading their 32s to 33s. We've touched on some tire specs, but never really confirmed what works.

I personally dont know much about tires and did some research/googling, and im coming up with the below. Anyone with a good understanding of tires care to chime in?

OBX stock tires - Bridgestone Dueller A/T RH-S 255/70/18 (32.1"). FYI i am seeing at $170/ea on tire rack

In an attempt to match what's on the Badlands, given its a 33. Badlands stock tires (this is for a 17" not 18" rim) are BFG TA K02 LT285/70/17 (32.7") - $258/ea

So given the OBX has 18" wheels, not 17" i should adjust the BFGs above from 285 to 275, so LT275/70/18? Tirerack says 33.3" (which is good, because if it was closer to 32.7" like on the Badlands, it may not be worth the upgrade over OBX stocks at 32.1").

So is that right? LT275/70/18? Keep in mind the OBX rim is narrower than the Badlands rim, so I am not sure how that comes into play, and requires another adjustment to the tire spec.

Thanks!

You won’t know what will work and won’t work until you test it in the vehicle. The Badlands has a different suspension and different wheels so that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to work on an OBX

If I stick with (what I think is) my plan to get a 4 door 2.7 OBX, I'll be ditching those ugly 18" wheels and going with some 17's and 33" tires for sure.

((desired tire diameter in inches)-(wheel diameter in inches)) = total sidewall height in inches

Total sidewall height / (potential aspect ratio x 2) = tire width in inches

tire width in inches x 25.4 = tire width in millimeters

(33-18) = 15
15 / 1.4 (70 series tire) = 10.71429
10.71429 x 25.4 = 272 millimeters or a 275/70/18 tire to have a 33" diameter.

Going to a 65 series tire would take you out to 295 on the width which would seem to be too wide for the OBX rims. But stepping up to a 75 series tire would keep you at 255.

With Jeep Sahara that come with 18s, it is often more cost effective to get 17” wheels with the correct offset for larger tires.

272 millimeters or a 275/70/18 tire to have a 33" diameter.
Thanks. So it looks like i got it right. Seeing $258/ea x 5....with little value for my take-offs. Now with the 'DIO' announcements, it sounds like the dealer may be able to put these on and x-plan will apply.

Switching to any true all terrain tire will make it look better. There are more options in the 265/70 18's that aren't E rated, but there won't be much size difference. A half inch increase in radius shouldn't be an issue, but we won't be able to confirm that until they are out in the wild.

I'm hoping there will be an option at build and price to upgrade the rims and tires to Badland size for a charge.
Every vehicle I have ever purchased always has tire/rim options.
The Sasquatch option adds a helluva lot more than just tire size.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

This tool is your friend

Tire Size Calculator

My plan is to go with 33x10 pizza cutters. Figuring it's only a half inch clearance all the way around and no added width so no spacers required. Hopefully it can be done without a puck lift.

It was asked during Q&A , and reps said no. Either stock or sasquatch. Kind of a bummer. It'll cost $1,500 to buy and mount 33s, and how much would we really recoup from the 32 take-offs? A few hundred bucks? It'll effectively cost us over $1,000. While it would cost Ford $400 (or less given its Ford) for the difference in the cost of the tires. If they wanted to charge us almost double that, i'd still pay. Seems like a missed opportunity for them given the margins.

Anyone with twitter want to ask Levine if 33s will be offered on non-Badland trims, like the OBX?

There is more too it than swapping rubber. The badlands has a different suspension set up for the larger tire size. You can probably fit the same size tires in an OBX but it will rub and might knock a fender off unless you modify the suspension too.

I am pretty confident the OBX and BB will take a 275/70/18 without a lift, but it remains to be seen. I have a good tire shop that will fit one for me and see without charge. I think that tire size will be perfect for me in an AT tread pattern and snowflake rated. I am , like others, hoping for an AT option. Even in the stock size, I would probably pay the up charge and wheel it a while with the factory tires. I do like the idea of a 17" tire with a full "skinny" MT or aggressive AT line the General Grabber X3 as an alternate to throw on when doing more "hard core" wheeling.

Some recent photos showed an OBX in the wild. there was a TON of travel room under the fenders. Some commented that 33s would easily fit. It probably could take 34s without a lift.

you can easily fit 35's on a Jeep without a lift too....As soon as you turn the wheels all the way and hit a bump it will rip your fender off. Nobody has really seen an OBX with true suspension and 33's on it to know for sure. Imho, if you want to run 33's get a Badlands or budget in for a lift and wheel swap on the outer banks. You might get lucky and not need it, but nobody knows for sure on that except Ford.
