So, off road, will hill start assist allow you to "rock back", (clutch it roll back and try again) when trying to overcome an obstacle?

So, off road, will hill start assist allow you to "rock back", (clutch it roll back and try again) when trying to overcome an obstacle?
On every MT I've driven with hill assist, it only works when you are on an incline, depress the clutch pedal, and put the transmission in gear. In that condition, when you take your foot off the brake pedal, Hill Assist holds it. If the vehicle is in neutral, no hill assist - vehicle rolls back.

Edit - it appears the good news is that on a Ford you can switch Hill Start Assist off. Just pulled this info from 2020 Ford Mustang Owner's Manual, "Parking Brake" section, page 156 (Warning notices omitted here):

HILL START ASSIST
The system makes it easier to pull away when your vehicle is on a slope without the need to use the parking brake. When the system activates, your vehicle remains stationary on a slope for a few seconds after you release the brake pedal. This allows you time to move your foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The brakes release when the engine has developed sufficient torque to prevent your vehicle from rolling down the slope. This is an advantage when pulling away on a slope, for example from a car park ramp, traffic lights or when reversing uphill into a parking space. The system activates on any slope that causes your vehicle to roll. Note: There is no warning lamp to indicate the system is either on or off.

Using Hill Start Assist
1. Press the brake pedal to bring your vehicle to a complete standstill. Keep the brake pedal pressed and shift into first gear when facing uphill or reverse (R) when facing downhill.
2. The system activates if the sensors detect that your vehicle is on a slope.
3. When you remove your foot from the brake pedal, your vehicle remains on the slope without rolling away for a few seconds. This hold time increases if you are in the process of driving off.
4. Pull away in the normal manner.

Switching the System On and Off Vehicles with Manual Transmission
You can switch this feature on or off in the information display. The system remembers the last setting when you start your vehicle.

Vehicles with Automatic Transmission
The system turns on when you switch the ignition on and you cannot switch the system off.

That's my issue. To get a second try at an obstacle (heading uphill) I would leave it in a forward gear, roll back with clutch depressed, then engage and try again.

FoMoCo copied so many Jeep things (Swing Tailgate, yes I would have preferred a regular Drop Down Tailgate), but didn't choose the Manual E-Brake Leaver.

Hill Assist is fine and dandy, but the Electrical E-Brake isn't. If/When there's an Electrical Issue and the Electrical E-Brake Locks ...... well.... it could be an expensive vehicle recovery if it happens deep into a difficult trail. Why couldn't FoMoCo just have given us the Tried-N-True Manual E-Brake Hand Leaver???? SMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep. That would have been nice. So would have been the 6cyl with a manual. And limit on which options you can get with manual doesn't make sense unless they really don't want you to buy the manual. The manual should have been offered with he same options as the auto has available and for every model just like Jeep.

It makes it harder and harder to get manuals with the options you want. in 5 years, there may not be an option at all for manuals in the US.
