HVAC Button Differences – Rear Defroster vs. Mirror Heater?

Hey everyone, I was checking out a post about a HVAC temperature display/volume gauge cluster swap and noticed a difference in the button layout between two Broncos.

In one, the button shows what is a rear window defroster (with an “R” icon). In the other, the same spot has what appears to be a side mirror heater.

So my question is:

• Do Broncos with a rear window defroster also automatically heat the side mirrors when activated?

• Soft-top Broncos lack the rear defroster, so in that case, the button only controls the side mirror heater?

• Is this trim-specific, or does it depend on the hardtop vs. soft top?

Would love to hear from those who know. Appreciate any insight!

I was kinda suprised to find out my soft top Big Bend had side view mirror defrost.

It does have rear defrost leads, but they don't go to anything. Same with wiper fluid for the rear wiper that isn't there. They just plug into dummy plugs on the driver's side cargo wall.

But yeah - hit "Rear Defrost" and I get side view mirrors heated up. Who woulda thunk

I’ve only used rear defrost when it’s actually snowy and frosty, but I’ll likely start using the button when it rains now just so the water on the mirrors will drop down faster. I’m assuming that’s the intention beyond defrosting them.

All my previous cars and trucks with heated mirrors have the three wavy lines on the mirror or at least on the driver side mirror if it has heated mirrors.
My 24 badlands does not so not sure if the mirrors are heated.

All Broncos come standard with heated mirrors.

I just checked the 2023 Owner's Manual. Here is the PDF Version: 2023 Bronco Owner Manual

So yes I believe Ducati is correct in saying it is standard, though I would imagine each individual could do a sanity check to see if the symbol is on each mirror. I will check after work to see if I have the symbol.

Some have the symbol, some don't. But there is a STRONG chance that if your HVAC controls show a rear window heater, you have mirror heaters.

So, @Ducati1098 is a Ford Mechanic at a dealership, so if he says something, consider it as the gospel. He’s been on here doing God’s work for 5 years now.
