Awesome, I grew up in that area and did a lot of jeeping with my grandfather there so those trails are special to me.

For a second I thought you were crazy and were planning a trip in February, but then the thread was a pleasant surprise about maintenance not a crazy person getting themselves killed, hah.

Just read this:

This is news we take no pleasure in sharing ... after consulting with engineers, San Miguel County officials have announced that due to the severity of the damage and the complexity of the repairs to Tomboy Road (County Road K68/Forest Service 869), vehicular access to Imogene Pass from the Telluride side this summer will be closed until at least September. The repair project is currently out to bid and will involve the contruction of a retaining wall with a drainage feature and a water crossing (Twin Falls descends from above on this portion of the road). We recognize the impact that last summer's severe washout will have on local businesses and back country enthusiasts. Bicycle and foot traffic will be permitted until construction begins later this summer.

That's a shame, but not unexpected as there was a lot of damage on that side. Hopefully they can get it done by the time I'm there in September.

I've got a trip planned for early September so not much hope of it being completely open. We are staying in Ouray so do you think it will be open to at least the summit coming from that side?

It's my first time out there so I don't know if they close the trail completely or let you go as far as possible.

They are actively working on the rockslide on the Ouray side right now, so I would bet that it will open up before September and allow you to do an out and back from Ouray.

Things are moving along well on the Ouray side. Very good news.

Now expected to open in June on the Ouray side, pending completion of retaining wall repairs.

San Miguel county tends to be less supportive of the off road community than Ouray County, but good to see they are trying. It would be easy enough to access at least to the Tomboy from the Ouray side, but might require cooperation between the counties for snow removal/maintenance.

Sidenote: I live about halfway between Ouray and Moab but have been staying off well known routes for years because of crowding. I did Imogene last year for old times sake, curated groups of 15 each Toyotas and Jeeps and the solo and small group Jeep/Toyota/ and Pickups :( . I was the only Bronco I saw that day, until I hit the highway:unsure:.

Thank you for your updates!
My family has enjoyed travel all over the state of Colorado, Silverton and Telluride from the late 60’s and on. I remember riding in the pink Jeeps from the rental place in Ouray.
Being caught on top at a high elevation over night in a lightning storm, seeing a Ford Crown Vic with an elderly couple, at the top of Cinnamon pass. Extreme wheeling with the great Tom Collins.
So many memories from back in the day.
THANK YOU

I met up with some friends last September in the area. I got lucky, I arrived a few hours before the other 3 in my group, and decided to hit Engineer. I saw one other vehicle the entire time, which of course, set up some rather unmet expectations for the rest of the trip. It wasn't too bad, but definitely pretty busy out there.

Darley Mountain never disappoints.
