After driving around with the Oracle light bar installed on my 2 door OBX for some time, I decided to remove it and make some tweaks to make it quieter. It definitely did not produce as much noise as an uncovered light bar would do, but still it was obvious that it was adding up some extra dBs. The plastic cowl was whistling and flapping at highway speeds.
I decided to seal the gap between the light bar and the cowl with an adhesive neoprene tape. I also added two pieces of the tape along the back edge of the cowl – the were two large gaps between the windshield frame and the lightbar cover. Neoprene is a closed cell material, so it doesn't soak up any moisture. It can also tolerate temperatures as high as 275F°.
I'm super happy with the result! Now I don't hear any noise coming from the lightbar. It's like it's not even there.
There's one side effect though. Due to the additional thickness of the foam tape and soft plastic of the cowl, its lower edge sits a little bit lower on the windshield and slightly interferes with the wipers. I already ordered a pair of 15" wiper blades – they should solve this issue.
