Was going to mention WNC, but you have options closer to home to cut your teeth on.

I'm also an offroading newb...and there is NOTHING in Houston. There's a couple of "parks", but you look at their sites/IG etc and it's literally just huge mud holes etc.

Closest thing I've found is 3-4 hours away. I've gotten real lucky and a group designed for Vet/LEO/First Responders found me and I've been able to get out a couple of times. I still do more mall crawling than off roading. There's just nothing in this concrete jungle.

As Yogi Bera would say "When you come to a fork in the road, take it"

All the best advice has already been put out there so I have little to add. IMO the very best way is to go with someone else that's already been, because it's easy to get off course and eat up time and fuel getting right. But even then, keep one of the apps running as a backup, and even better use the record function (if it has it) to help backtrack if needed.

Last time I found a "trail" it was because Google maps listed it as a Power Line Road.

Without a rear locker, I'd have been stuck in the desert. I'm guessing the last time they actually ran a Cat down the "road" was 2 decades ago.

Some of the most extensive damage that has been done to my trail rigs over the years have more often than not occurred under a power line. Those power line roads are often times fun other times downright terrifying.

I tend to seek them out.

There was a major (2-3hr) backup on the freeway, so I tried taking the power line road to get around it. When I cam across an xTerra high centered on a rock that was my first clue that this journey was not going to go as planned.

What if you aren't on BookFace like me? Serious question.

Honestly, I'd check out some local clubs (check Facebook) to connect with, they will know the areas, difficulties, and give trail support (you really don't want to wheel alone on something with decent difficulty). You'll usually meet some pretty good people, I've made lifelong friends from such.
I've used alltrails as well, check the pics and reviews for better feedback

I'm the same, no facebook. It seems forums like this are dying to facebook groups. I'm glad this forum exists or I'd not have a lot of the information I have now. I refuse to use facebook and all it's drama, no thank you. There's not enough good in the world to counter balance the shit show that is facebook.

+1 to everything above.

I wish the TN group here was more active. But, it appears they mostly use crapbook as well, and I do not have an account and refuse to have one.

For the OP question, I use the OnX App and GaiaGPS too as mentioned by others.

One of the many things promised, but not delivered.
My ‘23 Outer Banks has connected navigation, and anytime you put a destination in it gives me the option to include 4x4 trails if I want. Looking forward to trying it out once the nicer weather arrives. I’m in central New York, and we are looking at a late season winter storm coming in tomorrow afternoon thru Wednesday morning. Snowfall rates up to 3” an hour and 20 plus inches by the time it’s done

I highly recommend paying for TrailsOffroad and Gaia GPS. They both have an app and website and are each around $30/yr or something like that. You will thank me later.

Protip: Find the trails in TrailsOffroad that you want to run, then upload the GPX file to Gaia GPS from the TrailsOffroad website. It's one button. I've got a few other little tips and tricks so ask away.
