I really don’t understand the mechanics of a wildfire. I understand that it is hard to save a house (although I don’t understand why someone hasn’t invented some kind of fire resistant tarp that you could drape over your house to protect it), but for your vehicle couldn’t you drive to the nearest WalMart and park it in the middle of the parking lot? Would that give you enough space from the fire?

Simple fact, nothing will you save. This is a wind storm with flames.

I'm certainly no expert, but at some point when the fire is out of control, it spreads from house to house with alarming speed just like a forest fire. For the safety of everyone involved they just have to evacuate everyone and let it run its course. They will try to regroup ahead of the fire and do what they can to stop it. I can imagine when you're told to evacuate your mind is not on cars but keepsakes etc. that insurance can't replace.

I used to cover wildfires visually and I can say without hesitation, it's like they're alive. I've witnessed and experienced some pretty harrowing scenes and probably put myself in mortal danger more than once. I've seen a giant ball of flame literally jump across a road 40ft. overhead and into a new patch of trees. I could feel the air being sucked out of my lungs. It was nuts.

S. California had a lot of rain last winter then nothing. So trees and lots of plants grew then withered into combustible material due to the following drought.. And the Santa Ana winds were incredibly strong during this event, like hurricane strength, with no moisture. Then you have humans starting fires and people building homes where we probably shouldn't be building homes. Just a really bad mix.

Ford Bronco LA fires and burned Broncos 🙏🏻 [WARNING: NO POLITICS] 1736697820757-nm

Everything around is burnt to a crisp and yet the blue, PLASTIC, trash can survives, unscathed. I have seen other videos and everywhere you see the blue trash cans they look perfect. I guess fire doesn't burn blue plastic.

The wildland guys do this to protect historic cabins, etc. But it's pretty labor intensive and wouldn't be practical for whole neighborhoods.

I was going to say fire fighters carry portable shelters like this. They are good for a fire that burns through quick, but next to a huge fuel source that burns for a long time, they don't work well.

That's one of those items that you pray like hell you never have to use. Wildland guys are a different breed!
