I'm in the auto industry, holes do weird things, a tiny hole will siphon water up a channel. I say this to say the route in may not be up high. I found 2 open seams on my driver door while cleaning it up after getting muddy snow everywhere. They were both on the driver door. This can cause seams to rust out.
