Would love to know more about your setup inside the trailer - do you have electrical? The Woolly Bear seems like a great value.
Yes - the woolly bear comes pre-wired with power…so in the main field kitchen area you get a couple USB ports and a 12V outlet…and a few switches for storage compartment LED lighting and underbody lighting. This is all powered off a Group 24 battery stored in the battery compartment at the front of the trailer. The battery is charged via your 7pin trailer connection to the tow vehicle…but can also be charged using solar panels that can plug into an Anderson jack that is located on the front of the trailer. The sliding drawer compartment on the back also comes pre-wired with a 12V outlet so you can plug an electric cooler in there.

While all of that is nice and does a good job, you’ll likely need additional lighting for when you are cooking and doing other things around the trailer….I have a few rechargeable magnetic LED lights that I can attach to basically anywhere on the trailer or my bronco.

This is pretty interesting. Couple one of these with a small offroad trailer (I'm getting a 2 door so retail space is a premium already). I can picture something like that working for my needs. RTT is out for me, since my dog isn't nearly nimble enough! But, yeah... I'm picture it all now.
I have had a shiftpod for 5 years now. It's really well made and any issues have been fixed by their support team. Great warranty. Great insulation for cold weather too, I've used a heater with this in 10 degree weather and it had kept us toasty. Also great in windy weather bc it didn't flap. But it is quite big packed up. It's a damn body bag. I have trouble putting this up in our roof rack, so damn big and heavy. I'm thinking about switching to the shiftpod mini, looks more manageable even tho I won't be able to stand up in it.

I just picked up this bad boy. Used to be a 92 Coleman but has been completely redone and lifted for 31s.

break in run of 550+ miles. pulled very well smooth no sway from semi trucks.

That looks awesome, and a lot like the kind of trailer I'm looking at.
Have you towed it off pavement yet? If so, how does it do on dirt with the Bronco pulling it? I want to be able to take a trailer similar to that (about 2500 lbs dry) to some camp spots that are some light off road to get to. Like, I could take the minivan to these spots, so not super out of the way. Then, unload the trailer from the Bronco, and go actually offroad without the trailer, come back to the trailer, make dinner, yada yada yada. That kind of stuff.

Finally getting around to posting a few more pics of my trailer from a recent road trip from Indiana to Moab. Did a lot of camping and got out on a few trails as well.

The Bronco did awesome on the long drive out and back (~4400 miles total) - towed the trailer like a champ - hardly noticed it was there.

Converted a 6x12 cargo trailer into a camper. Lock and roll hitch, 35s, sleeps 4, weighs 2660 lb dry. Kitchen in rear with fridge, sink and 7 gallons of water on a electric pump. Solar panels up top charging 12V battery.

The present rated towing capacity of 3,500 lbs (yes, it may go higher for certain model/options) narrows the choices for a top-quality, overlanding camping trailer. There may be ideal, but not inexpensive products coming into market just in time, well suited for the BRONCO.

Have my eye on the OPUS Lite (https://www.opuscamper.us/lite/) arriving in September with a rugged chassis, independent suspension and articulated hitch.

The specs seem custom-tailored to the BRONCO:
  • Dry Weight: 2,380lbs
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: 3,527lbs

What other solutions do you have in mind?
I ordered an Opus lite it should be here next month. I have looked in and tested these out. really the best option for the price IMHO.

I'd love to hear more about your revamp here.
You did very well, and saved some $ over the overland-ready options out there, I am sure.
Looks great, good job!

This is awesome. And what it's all about.
Happy for ya'll that you got to get out there and have this experience.
That's a good-looking setup, pretty envious here! :ROFLMAO:

Man, I never knew indecision until I started entertaining potentially getting a tow-behind setup.
So many options, a giant range of pricing/options, so many pros/cons of each different style.
Once (and if) I get serious wanting to go tow-behind vs tent camping and packing it all with me, I'm going to have to do a spreadsheet with data to compare everything. A person could spend weeks researching and diving into the rabbit hole.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It was a really fun project! I could go on and on about everything I did and how I went about it. There were only 3 requirements when we were trying to decide what to do for a camper because as you said the options are endless.

They were hard walls, sleeps 4 and off road capable.

You'd be surprised at how hard it is to get those 3 requirements into one package when looking at the existing camper options out there. There are a couple but they are very pricey. So that's why we decided that I would build out our own. The trailer cost about $6k and I converted it for another $6k, so certainly saved a lot compared to the options that met our 3 criteria.

my bronco never came, so I’m willing to sell this now. The trailer had a lot of potential for Overland build, but if I don’t get the bronco I have no use for it.
make an offer…
