This is my only regret getting the 2 door.
I mean, who would've known they would chop the tank by 30% when they chopped a third of the car off?

Living vicariously through your trip ATM. Looks awesome. I'm planning something for winter to go up the Pacific coast, over to Banff, and back down through MOAB and back to sunny LA. But only if my RTT is installed by then.
Yeah, that bugged me too about the 2-door. However, have you crawled under and seen just how hard they worked at stuffing as much tank as they did in the 2-door? Not the best photo, but it's kinda integrated around the rear swingarm and goes as far forward as possible. And nicely protected too!

I'll have to admit that I've never seen the bottom of my car, except for when I'm power washing it to get the mud off, but I'm only looking for mud, not the components. I'll have to check next time.

And also, I was being partially sarcastic because, well, a third is a third.
Despite the shortcomings, I'm thoroughly pleased with everything, even the shortcomings!

With 985 miles on my totally stock Outer Banks we started the CDT from New Mexico going North. I took a pair of Maxtrax's and a shovel. The CDT is about 2,900 miles long and goes through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. The normal starting point is either Antelope Wells, NM on the Mexico border or Banf, Canada. Because of the rains we started in Grants. The area south of Grants becomes a mud pit all the way to Pie Town after a rain, and the fire closure in the Gila was still in effect, which would make us miss most of it.

The main path took us onto cattle and coal mining country. A washout forced us to backtrack and take one of the alternates to Cuba, NM. The trail from Cuba to Abiquiu NM is 77 miles long an is mostly washed out with large rocks and rock beds. It took us 5-1/2 hours to go through it, finishing at 9:00 PM.

Still on the trail, so will add more later.

Abiqui to 64 was a breeze. There to the Colorado line was slow. Lots of erosion and iffy bypasses for downed trees. Only used low and the locker once going through a muddy ditch to go around a large downed tree. This was the last time we used low or the locker in the rest of the trip.

Beautiful country.

No trail problems through Colorado and up to Rawlins, WY. A little slippery mud going up Marshall pass was the worst we saw. There was a fair amount of rain. The route out of Del Norte was fun, lots of dips through washes followed by fast ranch roads. Needed good approach and departure angles, my front parking warning beeped twice going through washes.

Enjoyed your photos and travel story. Colorado has some amazing scenery. One of my favorite routes from Oklahoma was west across Texas panhandle angling northwest toward Capulin National Monument and Folsum NM, through Raton, NM, then west following the Red River to its headwaters near Eagle Nest, then skirted north around Taos then due north on NM522/CO159. On the high plains driving north to San Juan CO we encountered a big herd of wild horses. Only saw a car every 5 minutes on this stretch. Pretty desolate. The horses thundered alongside the road heading south. Had to be at least a hundred.

I have done this route North to South, from Eureka Mt to Pie Town NM. On an adventure bike.

Looking forward to doing this in the Bronco with the kids.

Nice pics. Thx for sharing.

I live 6.5 miles from Pie Town NW off of 603, and yes, be prepared to spend a couple of days stuck if you're driving 603 after a heavy rain (or even snow)! Had a 2021 Trail Boss and slid all over the place going to a friend's house for lunch this summer during a monsoon rain, but now that I have my 2022 BD, I feel a bit more secure. You could have taken 60 to Quemqdo, then 36 to 117 to Grants (all paved) and 117 takes you right throughthe Malpais Conservation Area, which is really cool, and I've seen wolves there several times; saw one on my property about 6 months ago as well, and I'm glad that my 100 lb Pittie/Mastiff didn't see him! Sounds like you'll enjoy being an ex-pat living in CR, and have fun with your Bronco!

We plan on running the lower route from the Mexican border to Grants in the Spring, then go do the Colorado BDR.

That sounds really cool; what kind of motorcycles do you have?

Sweet! I thought that the BDR was bike only; shows you how much I (don't) know!
