With 985 miles on my totally stock Outer Banks we started the CDT from New Mexico going North. I took a pair of Maxtrax's and a shovel. The CDT is about 2,900 miles long and goes through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. The normal starting point is either Antelope Wells, NM on the Mexico border or Banf, Canada. Because of the rains we started in Grants. The area south of Grants becomes a mud pit all the way to Pie Town after a rain, and the fire closure in the Gila was still in effect, which would make us miss most of it.

The main path took us onto cattle and coal mining country. A washout forced us to backtrack and take one of the alternates to Cuba, NM. The trail from Cuba to Abiquiu NM is 77 miles long an is mostly washed out with large rocks and rock beds. It took us 5-1/2 hours to go through it, finishing at 9:00 PM.

Still on the trail, so will add more later.

Abiqui to 64 was a breeze. There to the Colorado line was slow. Lots of erosion and iffy bypasses for downed trees. Only used low and the locker once going through a muddy ditch to go around a large downed tree. This was the last time we used low or the locker in the rest of the trip.

Beautiful country.

No trail problems through Colorado and up to Rawlins, WY. A little slippery mud going up Marshall pass was the worst we saw. There was a fair amount of rain. The route out of Del Norte was fun, lots of dips through washes followed by fast ranch roads. Needed good approach and departure angles, my front parking warning beeped twice going through washes.

If you're driving you aren't on the real CDT.

Awesome looking trail.
Do you have a link for a GPX file for the trail?

Thanks for the report. How many vehicles are traveling together? How much time are you leaving to complete the trip? Hmmm......

There were just the two of us in the Bronco.
We used two tracks, one for motorcycles from ADVrider and one for 4x4's from Overland Bound. They are the same for over 80% of the route.
From New Mexico to Teton National Park we used the motorcycle route. From there to Canada we used both, deciding which one for a section depending on which was closer to the real CDT or which was more interesting. I imported them into my Garmin and as a backup into Gaia Maps, on my phone. Good thing, too. The dash mount screw came loose and the nut fell into the abyss. We ended up using the phone and Carplay to show them on the Bronco's screen.

The normal time to finish is two weeks, but my buddy had to be back at work in California and he refused to camp, so we had to travel fast and far enough to get to a hotel every night.
We finished in 8-1/2 days.

Rawlins to Pinedale was mostly 50 mph dirt roads. Could do it in a Corolla. Lots of hikers on this leg, all southbound. Most of the trails are dusty, so you need to slow down or stop when you see them. This is the longest section where the hiking, biking, and motorized trails match.
Pinedale to Moran (ADV motorcycle route) was clear, but roads are rocky. 12 to 30 mph. Great views.

Moran to Butte was easy and fast. Took the 4x4 route and went through Grand Teton and Yellowstone parks. Even watched Old Faithful go off. Traffic in the parks was counter commute in the morning. Just watch out for cows on the road after Bannon.
Southbound cyclists we met today:
Italians - 1
English - 2
Dutch - 2
Americans - 2
Slovaks - 2
Scottish - 2
