I'm not even really sure how I did this but I messed up my clearcoat pretty good in a couple spots. 😭 In the main spot (shown in photos) I was trying to get some sap off my hood with some goo gone and a sponge. The sponge I was using must have been too abrasive as you can see the 'cloudy' looking blob that was left before I realized what I had done. Anyone have any good suggestions on fixing/correcting this? Really hoping there is a product that can be used to restore it the clearcoat? Doesn't seem to actually be scratched down to the paint which is why I'm thinking it's just clearcoat damage...🤞

Those are deep and need some serious paint correction. I can’t tell if you can fix it without repainting from the photos but the steps would be: sand with 1200-1500 grit, follow with 2000 and then 3000 Trizact if you have it, compound, and polish. I wouldn’t attempt it unless you’re very good/familiar with a DA sander and a buffer. Someone who’s trained can fix it in less than 15 minutes, assuming there is enough clear coat remaining.

I would seek a professional. There are cleaning places that do paint correction. Might help.

Interesting, this is good to know, thanks! I'm not that familiar so will probably leave it to a pro but good to know it can be done fairly quickly. I think there is enough clear coat but we'll see.

Those are deep. Geez, I hate it for ya.
@MnLakeBum has the best approach and advice but that’s only if the clear is even thick enough to get down to where the scratches stop.
And even then it will be terribly thin there by taking so much off.
Definitely recommend professional body shop help at this point.
my money would be on a hood respray.

Dang hope you can clean it up a bit. If not maybe get one of those hood deflectors for the meantime? Looks like it’s at the edge right? Should cover it.

What kind of sponge did you use so I can stay far away from them lol.

i pretty much would never ever use a sponge. I use microfiber cloths generally for things to avoid paint damage... tree sap is tricky to get out so you have to be very careful.

For future sap issues I have had good luck just using isopropyl alcohol with a paper towel. Trick is that you have to wet a spot of the paper towel with alcohol and only wipe a few times, then wet another section of the towel, wipe a few times and repeat this process until sap is gone. If you just try and wipe it all away at one go, it will end up smearing the sap all over. It takes a little patience. There may be better options, but this is what works for me. For reference, I'm usually dealing with Florida pines, not sure if all sap is the same?

Like others have said, its gonna need some wet sanding and a polish by a professional. Seeing the damage that was done, Don't attempt to correct this. Next time use a micofiber towel with isopropyl alcohol or clear coat safe bug an tar remover.
