I have a 2003 SportTrac with color matched protection and have never had a door ding. What you show, however, is more unsightly than a door ding.

As for the original post, I'm not a fan of a metal accent. Something in dense rubber that give a similar appearance... maybe. Probably wouldn't serve as door ding protection unless it's much lower (like the second photo) or unless you only park beside other lifted vehicles.
