I am very interested, 1050 mile drive for my wife and I from central Iowa. We were out there 2 years ago in FJ and I want to go back in the Bronco.

Do we need to register or do anything if we decide to go?

What's funny is it's almost the same distance from me.

I think you just show up.

Interesting, I always wonder how far it is from different places. This past September we went to Ouray CO and it is 1050 miles also the same as Moab. Ouray is so beautiful everyone needs to go there and hit up Imogene, Ophir, Alpine Loop, Black Bear etc etc.

Also that book you talked about is great we have one for Utah and Colorado and have used it many times.

I'm going to pick up a copy of this book, it's supposedly really good for Moab first timers. I'm not sure how much it's changed over the years but there are 4 editions so grab the newest.

Yes, this is the one to go with. Please note that there have been hearings involving anti-4x4 eco-zealots and the BLM about closing down quite a few of the Moab trails and backroads, so anything you have may be out of date. Moab planners, check this out.*

The Wells & Peterson guide is excellent. I also bought Utah Trails: Central Region, & Utah Trails: Northern Region, by Massey, Wilson, and Titus. I was disappointed--fewer trails and less detail. I was poking aruond the west Utah desert last August (Millard, Juab, Toelle, and Box Elder Counties) and found I was using on-board navigation (onX) and the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer much more. The DeLorme gave me a large, print-in-hand view, and brought to my attention lots of roads and details the Massey book did not.

*Also, learn what you can from the Easter Jeep Safari, a major event going back to the 1990s. They must have a lot to share.

Okay so some of the stuff me and the wife did when we were out there this past summer were more of the easier things since it was just us.. and didn't want to get myself in trouble since we were solo. Here are some of the things we did (not including the touristy stuff in the national parks):

1. Drove down Schafer Canyon into White Rim and just wandered around. We exited out on Potash Rd.
2. Gemini Bridge and some of the adjacent trails
3. Mill Canyon Rd and the adjacent areas.

Obviously do your research first on the off trails but that book you have is a great resource. Download your maps to your phones/tablets since you will not have reception in many spots.

Looks like registration will be in Feb around Head & Heartache day. 💘

If it’s anything like Easter Jeep Safari, you only need sign up if you are doing trail rides with the organized group. If you just want to check out things on your own no need to register. Just be respectful to stay off the trails when the organized trail runs are scheduled. I would recommend doing the organized runs with the groups at least once, they are usually very fun.

Looks like we’ll probably need to take this class. Ran across this new thing today on an overlander’s insta.

Maybe not since this is sanctioned event, but may not hurt to do it anyways.

Is it bad that I’m from Utah and wasn’t even aware of this requirement?

At least it's free. That would never be free in California :sneaky:

I picked up a free map of all the trails a month or two before the Easter Jeep Safari. Then I went back there two weeks after and there were still more of them in the places where free tourist stuff is available.

I mainly wanted to know where not to go so that I don't ding up my Bronco. I was there for the White Rim Trail, which isn't on the list of Moab trails, but is in Canyonlands National Park.

I'm reeeally going to lean on my wife for this one. Production date scheduled for 11/28 so that should give me a little wiggle room to get some stuff buttoned up on the ride. Now I just need to convince her that the kids can miss a week of school. We'll call it a geographic excursion field trip. 930'ish miles from KC will be a fantastic shake down period too. 😬👍🏻
