I would like the upgraded shield as well, mostly for peace of mind. Funny, the picture of this thread, the alternator was fine but still a cool picture 😁

Would be cool if we could get the shield installed preemptively under warranty
Yeah but then Ford would be spending a bunch of money replacing shields on a large majority of vehicles that will never even go off-road or have this failure. Understandable why they won’t do that.

At least they acknowledged the issue and are willing to fix it on those that it does happen to in the future. Plus now no dealer can claim this is because of abuse or refuse to address the issue.

Think I'll just order the part myself and have a go at installing it...no way a dealer will cover this preemptively and no way I'll have an issue with it before warranty runs up.

I understand what you mean, but they can’t claim only part of a TSB.
Even doing it outside of the TSB, dealerships don’t really do preemptive repairs for something that hasn’t failed yet.
Ford wouldn’t pay the dealer for these things.
Got it. 😉

Looking for some sketchy muddy scenario nearby...

Of course I kid. Barbara's in their mallmobiles and all.

No. The issue is muddy water running through the alternator depositing minerals that damage the stator.

They are replacing some guard that reduces water intrusion into the alternator.
That makes so much more sense.

Been keeping an eye out for an aftermarket shield solution, so I'm glad that Ford took a stab at this problem and glad that they are recognizing this as a warranty concern. It seems like installing the new shield is a pretty cheap/easy fix that may help me avoid a really bad day if I were to experience a failure deep in the back country.

Haven't been able to find any pictures of the new part, but apparently this is what the prior model shield looks like. FWIW, the new part number costs twice as much as the old, so hopefully that's a sign that it's all around more substantial than what I have today. Going to take a chance and order the new one, so assuming they actually have availability I should know soon enough.
