How does the plate mount to the cradle? Im trying to figure out the need for the set screws if that whole thing is one piece?
Because with out the set screws it’s just a big hinge. The bottom face is pretty close to the bottom angle on recovery point. So when winch pulls it sits nice. But without set screws you could push the whole winch back into the grill. Bottom face would then pull away from recovery point bottom angle

We placed 16th inch spacers around all three sides of the recovery point when making the cradles. Otherwise you would not be able to slip it on and off after the welding changes the steel. This gives a little play which is all fixed with the set screws

My assumption, based on the pics is that the plates on the recovery hooks look like bolt-through and will swivel on that axis if not having some kind of "stop" or limiter in both the up-down and in-out planes of movement.
I've been dissecting this contraption for a few minutes, best I can come up with.
Looks stout (1/2" plate!!!) and heavy (1/2" plate!!!)!

Pretty ingenious approach and final product.
I love the fact it can be removed at will as to not cart around a winch 24/7.

Sorry I am slow and I'm just trying to wrap my head around this...

If it sits against the recovery loop plate where does it have to go?

If you sit and look at the actual bronco the top plate of the cradle is not able to travel is deep into the Broncos face as the recovery point sides therefore the cradle is really only 2 inches deep the recovery points or 3 1/2. Thus creating the hinge affect because top plate stops essentially above hinge

As you can see with half inch plate steel you cannot get in that tight area around the shroud. Therefore cradle never carries fully into the Broncos face

So I wanted a winch mount on the front of my Badlands. But not all the time. All the winch plates I see involve pulling off the front bumper and replacing the factory recovery points. All that seemed a little to permanent for me.

My wife loves the face and isn’t a fan of blocking the front all the time.

My goal was to be able to drop a plate over the recovery points kinda cradling three sides. Then attach a hitch receiver at a vertical and drop in a removable winch plate.

The cradles are self threaded and receive 3” long 7/8” grade 8 bolts through the recovery loop. To prevent swinging like a hinge there are 4 set screws that tighten against the face and bottom edge pulling tight to the big bolts.

My fabricator insisted on heavy duty for pulling forces. So every thing is tongue and notched 1/2” plate holding a 2” receiver. We cut down a harbor freight universal winch plate and gusseted it to the cut down hitch post.

Though a bit heavy it has helped to level the truck out after building an overland set up in the rear. All this is in preparation for a Florida to Colorado road trip with 3 good friends. Leaving Tuesday morning and will be picking up an off road tear drop for 4 days in the Rockies.

After adding the platform, fridge and box there isn’t much room so I built a swing out hitch cargo box. This will be left at the rental place while we haul the trailer. Couldn’t see the plate so needed to relocate it and added some marker lights. Plugged into the trailer light receiver.

So now Gloria is all ready for her big trip. Not sure I’ll need half this stuff but I’ll be a long way from Florida! If we are lucky enough that it’s open Imogene Pass here we come!

I had the basic concept but my fabricator Brian made it happen. Wish I had the equipment and abilities to pull it off.
