I was doing my usual "1st of the month" vehicle checks and pulled the dip stick on my 2.7. Much to my surprise, it was waaaaaay over the full mark. I wiped off the stick 4 times to confirm i'm not crazy, and it's been parked for 24 hours.

I text this photo to my dealer (who shall remain nameless - cause mistakes happen), and I got a call almost immediately to ask what was going on. I gave them the part number off the dip stick (not going to stir that mess up again here) and they verified on their ford system that my VIN matches to that dip stick, and it is indeed the right one. So i decided to sterlize a couple used oil jugs so i can re-use this oil with 300 miles on it and measure what was in here.

I ended up getting basically 7 1/2 quarts out of my engine, and a little bit more was still dribbling into the pan under the vehicle.

After dumping some of that excess into my waste oil bucket, i got it down to exactly 7 quarts on the dot. and filled it backup. Meanwhile the dealership called me again, and said, yep the manual is right, 6 quarts. And I explained, I put exactly 7 back in, let it run for a few minutes to circulate around, and it's right at the top of the full mark now.

so we're both stumped now, manual says 6, i put in 7, and nailed it right to the top of the mark lol. Just for S&Gs i checked my oil catch can to make sure it wasn't full from being overfilled on oil, and it's almost dry.

I don't know if 6 or 7 is right now, but I do know 7 1/2 came out lol. guess i'll keep an eye on it but if i'm at the top of the dip stick verified for my VIN, I think 7 is ok afterall...

thoughts?

This oil fiasco is hilarious. Nobody knows how much oil should be in these things, I feel like there needs to be word put out by Ford on exactly what's going on and how much to fill up with.

I have a 2.7l coming in soon so definitely going to check the oil first thing

Parked not moving for 24 hours it should be way up on the stick.. that’s not how you check the oil level.

There already has been. Ford said 6 quarts.

True.
I just run 6. Puts it dead center in the middle of the stick. Never had any issues. Either way, it won’t hurt to have 6.5 or 7 either.

I think that means after filling it, you can check it before starting. Not after it sitting for 24 hours.

It’ll obviously be much higher waiting 24 hours to check it, than letting it sit for 15 minutes after starting it and checking it.

i see you are right. i checked it again in the garage now that it's been off for 3 hours and sure enough, it's climbing past the full mark.

Enough said lol
Lol some people just like to waste money I guess 🤷‍♂️ no need for 7, but not my Bronco so whatever

All I know is the owners manual and all information put out by Ford currently says 6 is enough. So that’s what mine will get and has got for the last 16k miles

When I first got my Bronco, I let it sit overnight, pulled the dipstick and put a mark where the oil level was.

I prefer to measure when I know its drained instead of guessing at 10min, 15 min, 30 min, etc.

I will say when I did my oil change 6.5 quarts put me right at the top after the 15 min and back to the scribe mark overnight.

I plan to mark my dipstick when I take delivery and try to keep it at that mark. I would like to think engineers have it correct on the production line at the engine plant.
