As the title says, Ford just released a new SSM yesterday to hopefully clear up some of the confusion about the incorrect oil dipstick for the 2.7 that some people were ordering.

That really doesn't clear up anything other than to serve to cover their changes to the documentation over giving the dealer technicians and service department a valid reason why they have this huge discrepancy in why the factory fill is 1 quart higher on the 2.7L in the Bronco vs the rest of the 2.7L applications but they want to reduce the service fill from 7 quarts down to the same 6 quarts of the rest of the applications for the 2.7L vs admitting that they screwed up the dip stick and at least providing clear guidance vs saying well following the original service fill is unnecessary but won't cause any harm, but we want you to shortfill the oil level anyway.
The correct oil level now is uncertain between 6-7 quarts but running at 6 quarts is at greater risk for engine damage if it's meant to have 7 in order to ensure proper oiling when off road and at extreme angles.

The factory fill being at 7.5 quarts vs 6.5 on the other applications indicates that they meant for it to run 7 quart service fills but it's easier and cheaper to change the documentation than to issue the customers corrected dip sticks.

So no I'm not satisfied with their excuse that oh we accidentally released the Raptor specific dip stick for the 2.7L when the Raptor is supposed to be a 7.5 quart service fill and 8 quart factory fill on the 3.0L. This makes way less sense than what the truth is, which is that they don't want to admit more than they have to, but by saying it's okay to still run 7 quart service fills with the wrong dip stick they also voided the clause in the owner's guide about not filling past the max fill mark by saying that running 7 quarts at service fill will cause no harm.

What they should be doing instead is providing the correct dip sticks for the 7 qt service fill on the 2.7L Bronco, not treating us like idiots.

So you're just assuming that the original dipstick isn't correct and that the engine does indeed hold 7 quarts instead of 6, even though the people that built this engine are telling you otherwise after looking into the issue? Why? Because they were wrong the first time?

Yes, they clearly messed up the first time with the amount, but I doubt they would go through all this trouble to put out a service message and verify the correct amount and dipstick to just be wrong again. I also understand a better explanation would be ideal, but good luck getting that.

No, SSM 50981 says 6 is correct

Yeah, agreed. that doesn't clear anything up when it comes to the oil. It only clarifies why we saw different dipstick part numbers temporarily in the catalog.

Why does Ford state a 7.5 initial fill and that from the factory, regardless of which proper dipstick we have, the oil level exceeds the max?

Sure, I'll even be an idiot and pretend like 1.5 q can be lost somewhere in the engine. Still does not explain why from the factory it's okay to have the oil above the max line, but now Ford is telling me to only add six quarts to put it just at the max line.

Why is the factory fill a quart higher than any other 2.7L Ecoboost application if the engineers didn't intend to run 7 quart service fills for durability and the off road performance targets?

Why would you also again have them say that running 7 quarts will not harm anything, but if it was supposed to be 6 as they claim then they are massively wasting money on the factory fill even at corporate negotiated rates for bulk oil purchases?

This reeks of corporate bean counters trying to save a penny on providing the correct dip stick for the 7 quart service fills even if it will cost more in warranty work for those who followed the reduced oil level and subsequently lost an engine due to oil starvation and then Ford eats the warranty cost.

The dip stick is potentially correct at a 6 quart fill, but it is incorrect for the original service fill of 7 quarts as was in all of the documentation until they issued those ssms to try and cover up the wrong dip stick.

The people who actually built the engine specifically fill the Bronco's 2.7L with 7.5 quarts vs the F-150, Edge, etc at 6.5 quarts.

You'll never get 1.5 quarts of oil retention in this engine, more like 0.5 based on these factory fill to service fill differences.

I also see how you're ignoring the fact that they don't say never run 7 quart service fills, but to say that it's okay to ignore the max fill mark on the wrong dip stick because it won't cause any harm, so ignore the manual's warning on that. The FT4Z-6750-A part was for the fwd based 2.7L Ecoboost at 6 quarts. FT4Z-6750-B/C are also 6 quart sticks on a 2.7L, the F-150 has another different 6 quart stick, but those applications are supposed to be at that level. All of the previous documentation and consulting of the field service engineers have put the Bronco at 7 quarts until they realized that customers were looking for a dip stick that accurately reflects the original service fill level and were trying to buy the corrected 2.7L dip stick that they now try to claim was only meant for the Bronco Raptor's 3.0L, but that's not entirely true either.

So no I have not been given any valid reason to believe that after everything they did to make the engine prepared for the off road application they really intended it to hold only the same amount of oil on a service change as any other 2.7L application.

Unless they have an actual valid engineering reason for the change and it comes straight from the team validating the engine this sounds more like oh shit we need to change the dip stick on the 2.7L Ecoboost in the Bronco, it's really showing over filled from the factory and with the service fill, so the engineering team orders new dip sticks that read correctly for the 7.0 quart service fill but were overruled by the bean counters/accountants and lawyers to say that they will have the documents changed instead to match the parts in use, but you can keep the factory fill the same, that we don't care about.

the sheer amount of varied opinions on this issue makes it very clear that Ford screwed the pooch big time and need to CLEARLY address this immediately.

No more "it takes 'x' quarts, could technically take 'y' quarts, in certain conditions its suggested somewhere between 'x' and 'y'" etc etc.
