Rather then start a new thread on the same subject, I’ve update this one as a journal of our upcoming trip.

We found a place we liked on Hatteras. We’ll be down as a family 8/14-8/21

ORV Pass bought to explore the beach. Cant wait to leave.

EDIT: Original Post- “Any suggestions on beach town/places outside the main OBX tourist areas that might be fun to visit?”
Monitoring this thread. We’ll be in Corolla the same week.

AWESOME! You took delivery! Congratulation! 2D 🙌

Longboards nice! Water was still cold when I was down a few weeks ago.

I never really considered white for my Bronco but it really looks great, especially the 2dr. Love the lighthouse in the background, going to have to try a similar picture when we are down in the OBX in Oct.

Take the ride on Carvoa beach in Corolla to the VA border, lots of fun. If you like wildlife refuges there is Alligator River, Pea Island, Pocosin Lakes, and our favorite Mattamuskeet. Bath is a cute little town and Edenton. If you have never been Ocracoke island is worth a visit, the ferry ride alone is fun.

It's hard to judge when you say away from the main OBX tourist areas because all of the OBX is one big tourist area. Don't forget to stop off at "Kill Devil Custard" in Kill Devil Hills, best burgers, fries and custard and for the best biscuits "Biscuits and Porn". Of course there is Duck Donuts as well.

Farther south there is Cedar Island, Harkers Island, Topsail and Atlantic Beach, and Beaufort.
Don't forget the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills too.

New Bern has a cool downtown area. Mj's, Stingrays (no alcohol) and Morgan's Tavern are all good seafood spots. Persimmons has the best view since it is on the Nuese River. If you are there for breakfast the Country Biscuit is good. If you want to head further to the ocean Moorehead City has a couple of nice restaurants on the water. Ruddy Ducky's being one I go to quite a bit.
Happy motoring!

Came down for the week, it’s tropical down here right now. The ocean looks like the Bahamas. Got Some rain today

Been watching the tropic reports all week. Should start clearing to a beautiful week starting tomorrow. I think it rained there most this week.

We’re packed and ready to go! 😃

One thing to keep in mind….the beaches south of Salvo down to the point are notoriously soft…….even aired down you risk getting stuck out there……been beach driving there since 1985…….we mainly go to Frisco beach up to the point……

Thank you. Noted. No fun without a little risk 😉

We’re in Avon this trip. Plan to hit most the access points there and south.
I have no idea what the rest of my family is planning on doing this trip. 😂

Last trip (above) we stayed in Nags Head. Did all the typical North OBX stuff. Corolla. Wright Brothers Museum, Kill Devil, Bodie etc.

it’s a beautiful state and I’m throughly enjoying the freedom to explore it.

We just got back from a week in Avon...drove all over down there, wherever we could. Our favorite was driving the sand road down to the point in Hatteras. It's a super fun drive and the ocean down there was amazing. Clear, warm, tons of shells and different ocean areas for the kids to swim. I brought deflators and a compressor and lots of recovery gear, but the Sasquatch tires had no problem aired up completely, even in deep deep sand, so I never aired down the entire week.

Just a few things to add here (congrats on the already awesome-looking trip, btw) for future reference/others who may want to know.
And of course, it is all my opinion. Some may differ and that's ok.

I've been going up and down the OBX since like '93, love it there and really can't get enough time in when I do go.

Places south of Hatteras of interest (in order from N-S):

-Hatteras to Ocracoke Ferry is a shorter ride, maybe 45 minutes if I remember right. It's been a decade since I was on it. But Ocracoke is amazing. Amazingly slow, not much on the entertainment end of things, but it is like its own little country out there. Howard's Pub had great burgers and a cool vibe last time I went. You can drive on the sand. Some Blackbeard history stuff to check out. Watch for the 'skeeters.

-Ocracoke to Cedar Island takes you a lot longer, 2-2.5 hours if I also remember right. Gives you plenty of time to unwind, stand on the deck and watch birds and fish, play cards, etc. Good excuse for some family time while not running around.

-Cedar Island puts you about 45 minutes from Morehead City/EI/Beaufort.
Several things to do there. Fort Macon is really cool. There is live music on the Morehead waterfront on Saturday nights, and it is one of the coolest vibes and relaxing atmospheres ever.

-The Atlantic Beach end of the island has a few shops, a few restaurants, not a lot of heavy action or traffic. You can travel down the island past all of the townships and get to the Emerald Isle end where there are more shops, places to eat, attractions.

-Carolina Beach/Wilmington/ Ft Fisher area is quite busy and commercial, but a lot to do if the attractions and downtown life is your thing. I like it the least of all of the OBX just due to the amount of people/traffic/noise.

-Southport/Oak Island is less commercial fish-n-industry based than Morehead/ AB area. More people, more "upscale", but not as busy, crowded, or dangerous (potentially) as Myrtle. I highly recommend a Saturday spent walking Southport, eating at The Smokehouse. Best brisket I've had outside of TX. Oak Island is cool, Few Piers to walk on/fish from, several public accesses.

-Holden Beach and Ocean Isle are more residential/weekly rental type of places. Good, laid-back atmosphere. But it takes you a bit of a trip to go find stuff or a "night on the town".

-Sunset Beach is the last stop in NC, with Calabash being slightly more south. Calabash has some great seafood. Not a lot else, except for a few stores and some ice cream, couple of mini Golf places. Sunset just feels different to me. Not a huge fan. Both times I have stayed there, police cruised the lots, just an overall feel that Joe Dirt himself probably was near at any given moment.

One thing about the Ocracoke ferry. It did used to take about 45 minutes which was nice. Now Hatteras Inlet is so shoaled up the ride is more like 90 minutes each way. Still well worth it, but keep that in mind
