Serviceable by the owner? It’s a refrigerator on wheels, what’s there to do? :ROFLMAO:

Other thing about those “generators”, which in BMW was a scooter engine, they are loud and don’t generate enough juice to keep up with travel. Basically they are a limp home mode or in this case, limp to the nearest charger, not gas station since it’s not likely to hold much and you will be at less than full power for the travel. Some may feel better that this is a nice to have, but in application in real world scenarios, they’re terrible.
It takes till page 12 of this thread before some serious analysis of this vehicle’s capabilities will be. Here’s a summary of potential issues so it isn’t TLDR.
- The Scout SUV is going to be about as efficient as a Hummer EV. That means about 1.8 miles per kWh. (The F150 Lightning is 2.4 miles per KWh).
- The 300 mile range battery pack on the Hummer EV SUV weighs 2000 pounds. If the Scout PHEV has a 150 mile full EV range it will have a 1000 pound battery.
-That solid rear axle has the rear drive electric motor bolted to the axle tubes. That’s a huge amount of unsprung weight.
- That gas engine will need to be about 80 horsepower To generate the 40 to 50 kilowatts of power necessary to drive down the highway at 70 to 80 mph. (To account for losses 80 hp is probably the minimum). That means probably a 3 cylinder 750cc supercharged engine that runs at an efficient constant 4,000 or 5,000 rpm. It’ll either be on or off.

All for $60k?

I'm not an EV guy either but couldn't you just pack a Honda generator and a couple jerry cans of gas and accomplish the same thing with any full plug in EV?
Not quite. If that Honda generator is 120 volts and generates 1500 watts then it would take about 100 hours of charging for my F150 Lightning SR to go from zero to 100% charge.

Or I could tow my Lincoln 250 GXT welder use it with 30 amps and 240 volts output and get it charged in about 14 h.

People need to brace themselves for the pricing. What was shown at the reveal will not be available for $50k w/ incentives or $60k without.

What was promoted will not be what is offered in the standard entry model. From the optional Cabana top, Harvester Option, Offroad tires, Bench seat, etc., it will all increase the final price. I would expect a nicely optioned Traveler/Terra to be priced around $75k.

Expect a standard steel roof with an optional retractable moon roof or the cabana top.
Expect OBX style street tires as standard.
Expect a standard console without the built-in cooler. The feature-rich console shown at reveal will be an option.
Expect the Lockers/Offroad package to rival the cost of the Sasquatch package.
Expect the interior to be stripped down as standard. What was shown was the mounting panels in the cargo area and on the seat backs of the front seats.

Don't think any of us believe the $60K for a number of reasons, including the fact that these trucks are very big and more full size than a mid size Bronco. Think the Traveler is more akin to the Hummer EV, perhaps a little smaller and the Terra is very long with a real bed.

All I'm saying here is that these sound closer to $80K at the least. I know many people are ok paying these prices and as long as the trucks look as nice as these concepts, there will be buyers.

Based on where that Harvester range extender will sit, it'll need a small or flat engine. I like your ideas here. I'm thinking a 3 cylinder Boxer, or some variation and these will need to be maintained and have regular fluid changes that I hope are easy to access at home, but this will be German 100%.

Read a promising article of a direct to customer model like Tesla and I love that as I hate dealerships to no end, although those are a lot of jobs across the US. No haggle or ADM pricing would be nice as well, so they keep doing things that'll win some hearts and minds. That article pointed to a lawsuit on VW if they bypass the dealer network. We shall see how that plays out.

This thing will likely weigh 7-8K lbs and with payload close to 2K lbs, that's a lot of girth moving down the highway and on trails. But with the space that many crave, classy interior, late addition of this range extender, Scouts will move units and steal sells from someone (Tesla! Rivian), but will old fart Bronco and Wrangler lovers switch? We'll see.

Turbo V6 or a V8, I'm interested. Otherwise, not interested at all. It's a good looking truck, what a shame.

If they make a 2 door with removable roof, the proportions may look better giving it more style.
Now if they offer that with a rear seat delete with a flat cargo area, make it more utility for off road but not rock crawling off road.
Properly packaged to make it comfortable without the expensive bloat of every possible option.
(My biggest complaint with cars, to get that one option you want, you end up with 5 you don't and another 3 you could do without)

I already new I had no interest in this from the jump. I am not anti electric but the price point is just not there for me in this build. I am interested in the Aptera but that checks pretty much all my boxes in a secondary work travel vehicle.

and of those 8, 6 don't work or only halfway work, and the dealer and mfr look at you and shrug.

Nice bullet points. I thought I saw a video with image highlighting the Harvester power pack low and in the back. I can see a tightly packaged engine the size you mention fitting the bill.

The miles per kWhr figure you mention are eye opening. My wife's Ioniq 5 runs around 4 miles per kWhr in town. Upper 2s to 3 on the highway running. The Scouts are going to be heavy beasts.

I will be checking none of those boxes. This is going to go down like early Bronco orders of everyone wanting every option. The real winners are the cheap base models.

Auto marketing is all about figuring out how many options they can add that will still have the customer buying that package regardless of how many options in the package the customer wants. :)There's always the one guy that likes everything but that isn't the goal. In manufacturers' defense, making every single option a stand-alone choice is not feasible, especially on lower-volume vehicles.
