Just wanted to share what I came up with farting around in the garage today. I added a 22" tractor tool box (~$75, Allis Chalmers D17, amazon) to the inside of the tailgate with a piece 3/16" x 3/4" x 36" steel ($15 home depot). It adds enough extra space to have a basic "motorist assist" kit for around town in addition to some extra lockable space. I kept it off the floor as not to cutdown on cargo space. I'm going to paint it to match sometime in the future.

My theme was to keep it simple and out of sight (soft top thieves). I removed the scissor jack and replaced it with a bottle jack to use the space more efficiently. I also plan to add a couple of bags in the back whenever I do the off-road stuff to include a compressor, tire plug kit and more recovery stuff.

Here the list of all the items and where they are stored:
1. Yankum Rope 7/8" x 20' (plastic underfloor cargo box)
2. Ford tool kit and fuel funnel (jack space)
3. Axe with 28" handle or less (jack space)
4. Safe Jack with 3" extension and pad (jack space, select parts from the private kit),
5. Tire iron (jack space)
6. Jumper cables (tool box)
7. Generic soft shackles (tool box)
8. Element Fire Extinguisher (tool box)
9. My Medic - MyFAK first aid kit (not pictured, under back seat)

I like that the box can be locked to keep things secure when going topless.

It's a good bonus, I hate thieves but I find most of them tend to be lazy. It'll be as secure as your fastener choice! If you're looking at other tractor boxes, keep an eye on the hinge placement, you'll want to be able to flush mount one side to the swing gate without interference.
