So apparently, I do a lot of 6-ish to 7.

Ooo I like the pictures.

I'll freely admit - 6 is about my limit going solo. I've done 7's and most of the time I'm white knuckled thinking "Why did I think this was a good idea again?"

In a group, not nearly so bad, but I don't get the opportunity to do that very often.

I like OnX trail ratings, but I find that a lot of times they are a bit outdated - the SXS crew coming through like a wrecking ball on the trail, or weather/erosion/seasonal changes. There are a some trails where I'm at that are rated 4's and 5's on the app, and I think are more severe than most 6's I've run. Not saying all are that way, but would be nice if user feedback were a bit more responsive in updating things.

I do as well. Around my area the ratings found in Onx reports can be off by 1 or 2 (fortunately more often over rated). If the (granted volunteer) reporter consults this guide maybe it will help.

edit: The guide would be even more useful if it had pics of western/desert terrain as well...those trees, I mean they are worth a +2 on the rating just by being there right? :ROFLMAO:

I go to Windrock often. They use a 4 tier scale. It is easy moderate difficult and most difficult.
It rains a lot in winter and spring in east TN. Windrock has a ton of large events in the spring. We went on a moderate trail after 300 jeeps had rolled through it during a week long event that had torrents of rain daily. It was borderline most difficult after that.

Huh, if these pictures are accurate than some of my local trails are absolutely not rated properly.

But anyway, I'm of the same mind as @Brian_B . 6-rated trails is all I'm willing to do solo. And even then... iffy.

I will say some of those 6-rated trails in the Google Docs link you posted I probably would not do solo, and locally they would probably be rated 7. But ya know... British used to call us New England folks yankee doodle dandies, so that tracks I suppose. 🤷‍♂️

5 is my limit alone, usually due (at least around here) to remoteness (no cell coverage) and the need to hike out a long ways if I break something or get stuck.

Heck, solo in Moab I bailed on the back half of Fin's and Things (locally rated a 4, though others argue it's a 5) because I really wanted a spot for a couple of those descents on the first half. Looking at the guide later it turned out I had inadvertently chosen the hard paths... :ROFLMAO: Will return to Moab ASAP with a group.

I did 3 trails Saturday that were rated 6-7 I think.
Then did a trail that wasn't rated at all & it kicked our butts because of the mud lol.
But on a dry day, it was probably not that bad.... so the ratings are nice, but not infallible.

5-6 for the fun of it. The occasional Grade 7 obstacle if everything is working that day and my adrenalin is not already causing my legs to shake. I'll bypass any 8 with no regrets because this Bronco is also my daily.

My idea of a 7, or is this a 6??

The OnX trail system is tricky. For one thing, if a trail is really just a dirt road but it has an option to do a gnarly obstacle. Then the whole trail is rated at that gnarly obstacle. I find myself having to read the trail descriptions and looking at the uploaded trail pics for clarification on the trail rating.
I do really like OnX though as you can get a lot of info prior to going if a guide has taken the time to give trail reports or upload pics.

I’m new at this and I have a non-sas BD I haven’t lifted yet, so 4’s been my limit alone, 5 with a group.

the trail guide’s seem to vary widely by region. One 4 around here is like a 1.

…and I suck at snow, just got stuck this weekend solo, luckily there were passerby’s.
