Hey all, I've been lurking here for a while now but haven't yet seen a discussion around the possibility of painting the MIC roof. Does anybody have any insight as to how difficult/effective this would be?

There has been a lot of discussion about painting the MIC top. Summary, may or may not last.

I'm thinking of doing exactly that. I'm just wondering

1: Whether the material that the roof is made of is something that's already used elsewhere by Ford

and

2: If so, is this something that generally works with being painted?

Good info, if it's really POM its going to be difficult to get good adhesion. Polyoxymethylene is the family of thermoplastics that Delrin falls into.

There could be some adhesion promoters out there that work with it, but my knowledge of the automotive painting industry is now 15 years out of date.

I wonder if there's something in the marine world that would work. Gelcoat?

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Jeep's version of a MIC top doesn't look bad at all. But I'm sure it's a choice/preference...

There have been strides made in DTM and plastic- adhering primers in the past few years.
Either you have to have a mechanical bond (sanding/etching the surface) or a chemical bond, or best option=both.
As far as mechanical, in theory anything can be sanded/scuffed/etched. I've successfully painted porcelain appliances, chrome, etc.
The issue I've run into painting some plastics is the crevices in tight-grained surface profiles/texture. And then there is always the mold release agent that if you don't remove via specific solvents, it creates fisheyes at a minimum, adhesion failure worst case.
I've stated many times that I've done Jeep tops in several different ways with no issues. But these tops, who knows until someone gets their hands on an actual production MIC and does some work to it.
The early, pre-production MIC tops I saw first-hand are of a grain and texture that is as poor at ensuring adhesion as you can get.
It is the same grain on lot of aftermarket motorcycle speaker pods. I've had some do very well, some fail for no apparent reason when everything was done textbook-perfect for prep.
The actual production MIC, based on pics, looks to be darker, have a different grain, and maybe even a completely different chemistry.
Bottom line is me personally, I am not taking a stance on it to say definitively until I try one. And I'm not painting mine, happy with it. Until it fades or I want a different look.

If it can be done with a Jeep top there should be a way for the bronco too. You just need to go to the right place.

I'm used to reddit where the search function is as useless as tits on a bull.

I'll give it a try next time.

forum searches can be difficult to useless as well. Google works better

put this in the search bar for google

site:https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/ "Your search topic here, parenthesis not needed"

usually much better results than forum search.
