I have seen a couple Broncos around town where the owner upsized the wheels/tires but not the spare. Not only does this look comically stupid, but probably isn't safe to use as a spare.

This is a tale as old as time… ok maybe not that old but I recall my oldest cousin in the early 90s had an old CJ with four aftermarket wheels and a standard spare. Both of my old wranglers did too. Mostly because I just didn’t care. They were at least the same size as what I had on the vehicle. On my second wrangler I did finally buy upgrades and did all five.

I'm one of those guys.
I did buy 5 though. Taking a while to get the reinforcement I want. Every time I get a notification it's in stock, I'm busy and they're sold out instantly.
Thinking about saying F it and do a delete. Just leave the spare in the garage

I was just going to do 4 wheels for my winter setup (same 315/70R17) and use a cover, ran the cover a week and hated it. So I bought a 5th wheel and a used BFG for the spare. Just swapped my snow tires on tonight and the matching spare was the only way to do it.

If the guy is buying 20" wheels, at least it looks good from on direction.

In the event I need to use my spare (likely offroad) I do want a matching rim and tire. I agree with the OP that a stock non SAS rim and tire on the back with big tires and nicer wheels on the ground looks pretty dorky, at least run a cover.

I'm one of those guys.

I can’t leave the spare at home. If I got a flat I’d kick myself for turning a self sufficient issue into a tow truck necessary issue.

Tires. The word you were looking for when you gave up and let a blind chimpanzee finish the title of this thread is tires. Ironically, it is as irksome as the four-tire mismatched miscreants you wish to call out with this thread.

Correct if I'm wrong but doesn't doing 5 and incorporating that into your tire rotation get you 20 - 25% longer tread life? This is, off course, depending on how you like to do your math...

It also avoid dry rot on your spare, yes?

When I upgrade my tires, I will be doing all 5...

I agree to buy 5, but it's no more unsafe than every car on the road with a donut in their trunk.
Hell, there are cars that now come with a can of fix a flat, not even a donut. So they'll be fine, but it looks bad.

If your diameter from spare to new size tire is off, you are asking for differential trouble. A few percent off maybe okay for a very limited distance.

I'm not even thinking bout the spare for emergencies, I'm thinking the challange I would have on a tire rotation since I do a 5 tire rotation every 5k miles...

had a guy at work, lifted his Jeep and put 4 tires/wheels on. I gave him a hard time about the spare...so he just took it off entirely and looked even worse.

The guy I sold all 5 of my Goodyear's to, put them on his Jeep, but the spare won't actually fit on his tailgate. Apparently he needs a spacer. So he's driving around with no spare too. rofl

What BS
If you're runnin 37's your spare 35 easily gets you to the tire shop
4 are plenty
Yep, very few vehicles use a full size spare. For off road, you should be no more than 2-3"s between sizes.
