Starting a side thread for northwest people that are interested in a group drive from the PNW to Moab for the Safari in May.

I'm thinking I want to arrive in Moab the night of 4/30 and possibly make it a 2 day trip with some sightseeing. Any thoughts?

I think there were a couple others, tag them if you remember.

Iā€™m in if the wife and I can get a hotel in May. Are you planning to leave PACNW on the 28th and caravan down, or meet on the 30th in Moab and stay two days? Itā€™s about a 16 hr drive from where we live in Black Diamond without stops.

I'm thinking about leaving the 29th, staying a night half way, and arriving the 30th. Maybe taking the scenic route through Craters of the Moon or Winnemucca?

@Tricky Dick ... this isn't what you meant by "Caravan to Moab"?

Such a disappointment.

So any ideas or wish lists for the trip down? Route preferences?

I was thinking leave 4/29. Craters of the Moon/Arco would be a great place to stop, it's about 9.5hrs from Portland. I would probably go down through Montana to get there as it's an hour and 120 miles shorter than going through Boise, but a lot of PNWers could link up around Hermiston. An hour from Arco is Pocatello with plenty of hotel options. From there it's 2.5hrs to SLC and then 4 more to Moab.

Alternately, there's a cool route though Oregon with ghost towns that would make Portland to Boise about 10hrs, then 8.5hrs from Boise to Moab.

Any other ideas?

Thatā€™s 11.5 for me.
We will be leaving on Saturday and will go through Montana and come around to that area the next day. If we could make SLC on Sunday, that would be great! Its an easy 4 hours to Moab and trails!

Thatā€™s 11.5 for me. And would be a good stopping point. Long day on the road, covering a lot of ground.
I know quite a few are north of Portland but it would seem all routes run through it so it's a good reference point.

TheKim says we have to stop at Lucky 13 for burgers in SLC.

Booked accomodations for April 30-May 5. Being the wife wants to drive 5-6 hours only a day, we'll likely leave early the 28th and get to Moab on the 30th. After going there for the OffRodeo in Oct 2022, we've been itching to go back.

I'm a cyclist as well and may bring at least one bike - maybe MTB & road

Awesome. I'm currently thinking of arriving 4/30, spending the night at Horsethief Camp, running White Rim 5/1, checking in at the Airbnb that night.

If you go through Arco, don't miss Pickles Place, get you a pickle juice popsicle , you will be disappointed ;)
I'm not sure what to think of this idea!

Does everyone already have accommodations picked out? I'm booked for the 1st-5th. Looking at heading straight to a campground for the 30th, just outside of Canyonlands there is Horsethief or Wingate/Kayenta and both have reservations still open. Lots of first come/first serve around but I'm not counting on any being available.
