MIC top weight rating with factory roof rack is
- 110 lbs. dynamic
- 450 lbs. static
Reason for the relatively low weight is shell top construction/materials .

Obviously MOD is different construction and materials, so will it have different, hopefully higher weight ratings?

So you may want to look at Jeeps because they have what will most likely be that a similar top to the MOD structure.

I think it may be the same at 150 lbs

And aftermarket racks for the current MIC claim they can hold more because they support it in more locations to spread the weight.

The dynamic roof weight rating is based on CG height (and therefore propensity to roll over while driving), and the static rating is based on hard top strength.

If dynamic weight rating is based on CG, how do third party racks get higher dynamic weight ratings than OE?

BadAss Tent 200 lb. dynamic
Trailrax list 250 lb. dynamic
Gobi 300 lb. dynamic

it is not like any of those racks lower the CG.

Because the aftermarket is not liable (at least in the same way as the OEM is) when you roll the vehicle over and hurt/kill yourself.

That's somewhat extreme but the liability is pretty accurate.
It would take a lot of weight up top to make a difference in rolling your vehicle under normal conditions. Most roof racks (OEM) have a pretty low weight rating, especially dynamic, and there are so many variables to figure in that many people don't. Mostly because very few people go to a cat scale and actually know how much weight they are really driving around with.

Now apply that when off-roading where it is more likely to roll over, and to a roof that had been chopped up into 5 different pieces and any manufacture would have to be crazy to assume any more liability then the bare minimum for the rack. Can you overload any vehicle and arrive to your location safely - of course. But if you are on the highway speeding, and you need to stop unexpectedly and you didn't take into account that extra weight above your head, bad things can happen really quick.

Some people will never put more than 50 to 60 pounds up there, others will push it until they see the crossbars sag, but Ford is responsible for all the moving parts not to fail, a 3rd party only has to worry about the rack itself not failing they're not going to get involved when your breaks give out and your suspension has been beaten up, won't even get into trans issues when overloading.

Anyway, lots of factors.

But will the metal roof be stronger, I would think so, will the rack be any stronger at the connection points, absolutely not. Will Ford raise the weight limit, absolutely not.
I'd be more worried they will not allow the rack to come from the factory on more trim levels that are on the heavier side.

That doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't put it on, but it does mean if you decide to put it on your squatched out 2.7 Badlands with all the armor that you should be more conscience of your current combined weight including passengers and the big gulp you brought along for the ride.

Personally I'm waiting for the backbone system to come out for the Bronco.
