Ford Bronco Recovery Gear Ultimate Thread Screenshot_20220309-060832_Edge

(Pic for attention)

As some of us are waiting for our Broncos, I thought it would be good idea to get a solid recovery kit thread for all of us benefit from. I'm no expert but have been doing a lot of reading and research.

Recovery kits can get out of hand very quickly depending on what you'll do with your Bronco but we should list the very minimum MUST HAVES.

In addition, I've created a POLL with the most popular recovery brands to get a feel of what people feel comfortable with.

Please use the poll and share what items you'll be getting or already have as part of your recovery kit.

Let's have fun with this.

Thanks.

There have been several threads on this (not that it's easy to search threads) but I have a basic kit that I keep in the storage area with-

- 30' Strap
- 2 shackles
- Limb Saw
- Folding shovel
- Flashlight
- First Aid kit
- Tire patch kit
- A few basic hand tools and zip ties, safety wire, tape

That's all mostly for situations where others need assistance and it's "unexpected". Things like pulling people out of a ditch or break down.

In my "off road" box (for trail rides) I keep-

- 20ft synthetic recovery strap
- Soft shackles
- 8K LB Hand winch
- 50ft. Synthetic winch rope (gives me a max length of 100" with winch, rope and strap)
- Additional tools
- FRS radios
- Headlamp
- Air down kit
- Small jump box/power supply
- Compressor (To be added, can't decide which way to go)
- Anything else I need for that specific ride

*I add traction boards in the back, but they don't fit in the box.

I enjoy looking at what people use and look forward to more ideas, especially around an off road jack. I had a Hi-Lift I never used, I am interested in something like a bottle jack and extension that would fit in my off-road box.

When you say hand tools, which tools do you include? Breaker bar, hammer, socket (which sizes)?
Since you have a compressor, do you have any air tools?
What about spare parts like tie rods etc? What components are most likely to break?
Is a hi-lift jack needed?
For the radio are you using hand held or one build in with higher wattage- distance capabilities?

I'm looking to do more back country off-roading and want to be prepared:)

My hand tools are basic. Adjustable wrench (wide jaws for tie rod ends), good needle nose pliers, wire stripper/crimper, needle nose vice grips and multi bit ratcheting screw driver. No air tools for me. I do add a couple of hardwood 2x6 squares for Jack base and shims and a 3/8” ratchet with torx + and a few assorted sockets. I am using a handheld GMRS, but that’s next on my upgrade list. Nothing fancy, just a midland basic 15w kit with an permanent mount antenna on the cowl.

I'll have to go through and see if my list is current before posting it.

But for now, I'll recommend Voodoo Off-road for recovery ropes and soft shackles.

I was recommended to Voodoo my a helpful forum member, am pleased with their quality, and their customer service is superb.

Is there a specific 8K LB hand winch you would recommend?

I have one from Harbor Freight. I have not actually used it yet, but it’s rated well and it fits in my off road box. It’s a tool of last resort, but better to have something than be in a situation with no option. I have used traction boards for self recovery and they came in very handy!

Though I only have 2 of the 6k pull comealongs from tractor supply… I think I’ll get one of the synthetic rope More Power Pullers. Mostly for the longer pull, but also because I like the way they’re made. I do NOT have any experience with them though, so I can’t personally recommend them.

Hand winching sucks but better than being stuck. Haha

20’ hand winch and 30+ foot of toe strap can pull you a mile if you have enough time.

zBUT MAKE SURE ITS WELL TAKEN CARE OF. And spend the money on a good one
