the roof rack is rated at 100lb. then how does it work when they sell a two person tent for the roof, the weight of the tent plus two people and they could be two big people could be 500lb. or more.,

100 lbs is the dynamic limit when driving. Static limit will be much higher.

I’m just waiting for @ZackDanger to show up to drop some sick math, formulas, charts, and maybe a sick beat as well to answer the question :ROFLMAO:

What type of “contractor” are you? Because there is a *very* important distinction between static and dynamic loads…

According to new Equipment Installation Guide, the Roof Rack capacity in motion is 110 pounds, and static (stationary) is 450 pounds (ie, when using a car-top tent).

They had to raise the static load limit in able to sell the Yakima Roof Top Tent. It weighs 101.4lbs so it was over the limit that they are publishing. So that leaves ~350 pounds for 2 people and any sleeping gear, etc.

Am I the only one that is surprised that a soda can supports over 100 pounds? Who knew? :ROFLMAO:

So, it seems the roof rack won't do much good if it can only support 110 pounds while moving. Maybe I should cancel it on my order...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you for the science explanation here all!

Wind force can be a b*tch coming from someone that has nearly had two kayaks fly off the roof. Bow lines are critical! Cross winds are just as dangerous, especially where driving for a long period of time on a North/South freeway at 80 mph with a strong west wind.

I have no intentions of this sounding rude.

Imagine trying to drive a nail by taking your hammer and gently setting it on the nail. Nothing is going to happen. On the other hand, if you swing that hammer and impact the nail, it will drive the nail in.

This is the same principle on why the moving rating is lower than the stopped rating. When stopped it can hold a significant amount because it is not moving or impacting anything. When you are driving though Ford has to rate the thing so that if you emergency slam the brakes, or even to some extent get in an accident the roof rack will not break off and cause additional damage or injury.

your rack likely has similar limitations. It doesn’t mean it will fail but it could and In accident that stuff is gone. For legal reasons they need to have a static and dynamic limit
