Anyone cut the front of their air box to allow the air to come straight in vs down first?

i wheel and had traces of dry mud etc already from 16k miles, but just curious if id honestly see issues if mod the front with some drill holes or something.

I am only thinking drilling inside the intake section so its still sealed to the engine bay

Is the air flow even a factor, will I gain intake noise, or donā€™t bother.?

i have a S&B drop in filter now, and ford tuned 2.7, stock exhaust

Are you talking about this piece? If yes, I plan on cutting it out this summer when i install the S&B dry filter....but i do not wheel it. My Bronco is a pavement princess.

Yes, exactly- I wasnā€™t going to totally remove it, but I was thinking making a bunch or holes in it to allow more air into the box directly, doesnā€™t seem like it be an issue, but if I get zero tone change or itā€™s pointless, ill prob leave it.

but a lot of guys run aftermarket intakes and still wheel, so šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Iā€™d go with a Donaldson pro core filter and a hydrophobic sock over it. I do and have a non-modded stock box.

I already have the filter, so not gonna get a new one, a sock is an option, but wondering if itā€™s just holes,.

I would not. Stock flows just fine and the wall is there for a reason.

Hell, I use that little pocket as a DYI pre-cleaner (which adds even more obstacle for the air to go through) and I can still max out 18.5 PSI through the turbos.

Trying to increase your airflow is only going to add dust into you intake.

That section is there to deflect water intrusion so it doesnā€™t get sucked right through the filter when it comes rushing through the opening in water fording situations. Itā€™s a 2-part mitigation mechanism; thereā€™s that flap on the bottom of the duct right before it enters the airbox which is there to divert heavy water flow outside the box. Then the part yaā€™ll are talking about cutting deflects any remaining water down to the bottom of the airbox, again to keep it from soaking the filter element and drowning your engine. By design, it will also deflect dirt and debris from hitting the filter directly.

Youā€™re probably fine cutting it off or drilling holes into it if youā€™re never gonna wheel your rig or if itā€™s solely a ā€˜pavement princessā€™ or a mall crawler. If youā€™re looking for increased air flow, just swap out the stock filter first; it is quite a noticeable difference without the expense of an aftermarket intake system. My 2 cents.

As you Bronco will not be wheeling, drilling hole into the top will not cause any damage and may help bring a bit more air in.
I wheel, 100%. I have dirty water splash all throughout the engine bay- final for me, Iā€™m gonna leave it as intended.
