Anyone know how the tailgate locking mechanism can be engaged when the tailgate is open? Wife called and it wouldn't disengage for her meaning that the tailgate would not shut. Had to be tied shut to get home. See the pic. FYI the fix was to use the handle and open the tailgate like normal as if it was shut. Somehow she couldn't get the handle to do this....maybe she just didn't open it enough, I dunno. You *do* have to use the bottom part of the handle for it to work. Using the top of the handle is ineffective as it's the pivot point. EDIT: only way I've repeated this and got it to be in the UP and LOCKED position is to use a screwdriver and push it, acting like the lock pin on the door frame. Thanks!

She most likely contacted it somehow or it never fully disengaged when she opened it. I can't think of any other way that would happen.

Maybe she triggered the latch in the closed position when it was open .

Similar thing happens from time to time on my F250. Cycle it through open/close and Bob’s your uncle.

No kids, just her loading the back. So far I'm leaning towards it not being fully disengaged and then it locking when she attempted to shut it. So weird.

Huh, strange. I did cycle the unlock/lock several times and it did nothing.
