I disagree. In the 1940s we developed nuclear powerplants (molton salt reactors) that physically could not melt down and created very very little nuclear waste. That tech sits on the shelf for big nuclear plants that could make areas uninhabitable for decades.

Traditional sources of energy were cheap and plentiful and no one cared about environmental impact in the 50s. If the by product couldn’t be useful for the (cold)war effort it really wasn’t commercially viable.

Lots of variables go into how/why things become commercially dominant- not just evil corporate monopolies. ?‍♂
