But Toyota is suffering in the reliability front with new engines. Part of the reason they where so good was they just kept upgrading the older engines they had. They had the bugs worked out and with the new engines they've come out with they've had serious issues.
If you’re referring to the Tundra recall, that’s a totally different engine and also has nothing to do with the hybrid system.

The Toyota issue is with machining in the actual engine and it shedding far too much metal, so that’s a costly design flaw.

disclaimer, I am no fan of Toyota at all and have often dragged their boring designs on this forum and others for years.

However, I will not ignore the truth that Toyota makes the best hybrid systems by far and I would trust one of the new 4 pot hybrid turbos out on a trail any day. These are good options for Toyota people.

anything new is buggy, so maybe avoid a first year run. Don’t get me started on a 2021 Bronco on the topic of reliability.

Guess it depends on where you off-road. I'm mostly on the beach, so nothing there to damage the battery . . . Unless I end up in the salt water! Now that CAN'T be good for an electric car . . . Salt water!
I run on the beach also. Excess weight is a killer for floating on soft sand.

Scout vs Jeep vs Land Cruiser vs Bronco? Who was first? Who copied who? Who cares?

In all seriousness though, if it ain't got removable top, do not want. At least it looks it won't be going the way of the blazer name I guess.

But IS it a Scout?? Would it be a Bronco if Dodge, or someone, bought the rights to the Bronco? I think no.. its an electric VW SUV that some hotshot marketing person thought would drive interest by calling it a Scout..

You're correct, it doesn't really matter, they're all great vehicles in their own way. For me, the discussion is more about childhood memory and emotions. It's happenstance that my mother bought a 1967 Scout as our first 4wd vehicle for Cape Cod Beach driving. She let me use it, and because of that good experience, I bought my own 1976 Scout new as my own first vehicle. I later owned in succession a pair of "Big Broncos" when I was raising kids from 1990 to 2000, they fit our family needs. So, in 2021 visually and emotionally, the 6g Bronco was a combination of those vehicles, and matched the needs of my elder years. I assume many of us have similar stories where cars tie together our memories and our histories.

It will be interesting to see the reveal. From what I've been following on the Scout forum, they are working hard to emulate the visual cues of the Scout design, much like Ford tried to do with the 6g. If VW is successful, if to me as a former owner if it looks and feels like a Scout, I'll be interested.

Regarding mechanical systems, it will be different and no one will be happy. Even the innards of the '67 Scout vs the '76 Scout were quite different!

Lol pick nits much? Grille really? As far as I know Willys won the government contract and then they got built by Willys Ford and one other. Parts had to be interchangeable or what a mess that would be over seas. Ford may have patented the number of slats in the grill but so what. Ford patents everything they can. Nothing innovative about the number of slats in a grille.

Edit: This is from memory so I could be wrong. Lol
American Bantam, out of Butler, PA won the contest and most of what became the GP was mostly their design but they could not even come close to volume production necessary

And what IS a Scout? What is any vehicle? You and half the yahoos here probably think my 4-door Bronco is not a Bronco. There are a lot more Jeeps running around that are "not" Jeeps in the purest sense.

True, Jeep had a station wagon long before Scout. I drove many farm miles in one. Jeep had a "sports" car before the T-bird but the market was not ready.

Yes, VW gave us the Thing, based on WWII military VWs and it had more faults than the Rabbit trucks. But hey, the Thing could have been a Ford, if Henry II had spent the one single dollar to buy VW after the war when it was offered. Now who is the biggest car company in the world.

There is, despite the disgruntlement, a market for EV, and within that market, off-road capable EV. Scout Motors has kept all engineering and design close to the vest but initial indications are the Scout will not be a typical ICE vehicle with the engine swapped for a wired motor and battery pack.

$3B invested in a from the ground up facility in South Carolina despite or in conjunction with the deal VW has with Rivian means they have a plan

This "yahoo", (not sure of the need for that?), has a 4 door Bronco...I had a '71 Scout too, (and many other IH products), and '70 Bronco as well, a '48 willies, 2 '68 Willies trucks ... , and drove many farm miles on them also. Maybe I'm a "purist" but only in the sense that Bronco is Ford, Scout is IH, VW is VW, Harley Davidson is Harley Davidson, (even though it was lost for some time), etc... Its sad that happened to Jeep, although I'm glad that it ultimately saved the platform. Wouldn't it be strange if Nissan had the "F-150"? or Toyota had the "Mustang", or Mitsubishi had the "Camaro" or "Corvette", or Fiat had the "Challenger"...(I know).

As an employee of one of the subcontractors building the assembly plant the plant construction project is an absolute dumpster fire. They are definitely in a hurry to build a plant but no on seems to really know the the plan. Volkswagen has a history of failed assembly plants in the USA and they don't understand the American market. Never have. Yes they sell vehicles here and are a large International Company. I had a VW Atlas as a rental last year...........I would never buy one hated that vehicle so I'm not impressed with the VW automotive DNA they are working from. My personal prediction is after the initial rush of electric Scout vehicles are sold, the Scout will be redesigned and built with an ICE engine option if you want one. It's the only way the plant will ever get the volume needed to be profitable. Volkswagen is having corporate problems and talking about closing plants in Germany. There may be a rethink if this is really a good investment of the Company's financial capital. Just my 2 cents worth.

I was excited to see that Scout was coming back until I found out it was foreign owned, and likely to be more badge engineering (with some tweaks that VW will call significant/extensive/insert corporate jargon of the week) than a real, clean slate vehicle and line from an American company.
While corporate promises are worth their weight in spit, VW says it's a clean sheet design, body on frame.

I don't think VW currently has any body on frame designs to crib from, so not a simple badge engineered version of anything else.

The OP is correct. The 1966 Bronco (introduced in 1965) was styled predominately on the Scout which preceded it. The Scout, not the jeep, not the land rover and not anything from Japan was the precursor to the EB. And its a good thing as the squared off EB was a great body style that thankfully Ford replicated in the B6G. All that said, I like the Ineos and look forward to the new Scout.
The "squared off" Series Land Rover was the precursor to both the Scout and Bronco. The Bronco in terms of competition in North America was modeled to take on the Scout.

Scout EV SUV & Pickup Truck Reveal coming 10.24.24

https://www.scoutevforum.com/scout-reveal-coming-10-24-24/

I view the first Bronco as a copy of the Scout, not a Jeep . . . And Scout was first. Our family owned two. What both the Bronco and the Scout had in common in 1966 was they were both rustbuckets on Cape Cod.

Anyway, the "Reveal" of the new electric Scout, to be made here in SC, is due October 24. It is a Volkswagon, because VW ended up with the rights to IH (International Harvester). It is expected that a pickup and a sedan will be produced at the same time!

I agree with the Scout to Bronco comp; my Dad had a green scout when I was little and it definitely has a resemblance.

Oh, and I think Ford was also targeting the wrangler. ;-)
