Even granting your point at face value, we have to acknowledge todays engines are burning much cleaner than those of 3+ decades ago. So even for the "same" mpg we are producing less smog. The 2025 NOx standard is a 98% improvement from 1975.

From Ford's perspective, they'd rather dump $$ into EV R&D than ICE vehicles. Maybe the performance lines stay ICE (Raptor R, Mustang GT) but most everything else will be a BEV in 1-2 generations.
You are 100 percent correct on that. 1970s engine burned fuel so inefficiently.

I have been getting 20 mpg. 4 door, big bend, SAS, 2.7l, auto, Hard top, Premium fuel. That's an average over 3800 miles.

4 door 2.7 Sasquatch, average 19.6mpg on premium fuel, all the time, with mixed driving. I'm in the country, not much stop and go traffic. I just tripped 3500 miles.

In comparison my 2005 f150 supercrew 5.4 on 33" gets 14-17mpg. My 99 Wrangler 6 gets 16 and my 79 f250 with built 460 and 38.5" boggers gets 10.. So, have we really come all that far in so many years? Not in my opinion, I remember my mom's explorer back in the 90's getting 16-19...
But, my 2011 Kia beater with a stick gets 33.5mpg, cold ac and only cost me $500 bucks.. if you bought a bronco for fuel economy I truly think you deserve the disappointment, it's a giant brick with big sticky tires with twin turbos and can do 0-60 in 6 seconds.... It's not going to be a Prius...

I think that rationalizes the point. From an efficiency standpoint I really expected the 2.7 to get mid 20s with mixed driving

The vehicles I drove 30 years ago could not hold a candle to my bronco for fuel efficiency. Granted I always maximize cruise control, start/stop and eco mode, but my Badlands SASQ has averaged 20.6 mpg over the last 3600 miles.

My FE with 2.7 and Sas gets 18 around town and low 20's on the road. I am good with it.
You can't realistically compare any mileage numbers with a Dodge, because every dodge owner I ever knew lied about his mileage.

The new engines get better mileage, less pollutants and put out better hp and Tq figures.

It’s all 3 combined that the manufacturers are going for.

Look at a 1993 Ford Mustang cobra 5.0 compared to a 2022 Mustang 2.3L.

1993
225 Hp
280 Tq
15 city and 22 hwy mpg

2022 Mustang 2.3
330 Hp
350 Tq
21 city and 32 hwy mpg

This of corse does not mention all the extra things like safety equipment, better options, etc.
