The aluminum does seem to have a little more tensile failure marks than the cast (which does not have any)... but again... Not as much as I would have expected.

Really good question. I do not know the answer to without reference manuals... Too much theoretical and not enough practical on my end.Metallurgists feel free to pick this apart:
What effect does heat generation have on high strength aluminum?
Just wondering here if maybe the feed rate was bumped up during machining to get an operator better yield on his shift report???
The smoothness of the bore says no, with no indication of chatter. But still makes me wonder what the threshold is in that type of material. Regardless I guess to this specific instance.
+-10%? 20%?
If Quinn is so worried about it being dirty, he could just build it from inconel 625 and be done with it.I recall in an interview Quinn mentioned cast iron but rejected it because he thought it was too dirty when manufacturing. (I don't know if it matters, just saying what he said.) He may have given other downsides, but I remember that. They do seem like they'd be pretty heavy.
Actually, I know of an even better material they could use, but it has only one known source:If Quinn is so worried about it being dirty, he could just build it from inconel 625 and be done with it.
LOL - That way it could remain overpriced and strong. Also heat won't be an issue!
Heat should leave with the chip. Otherwise you would have heat based machining distortion on every bearing seat out there. Between flood cooling and chip carrying the heat there is typically very little heat build up in the part, even with aggressive aluminum machining.Metallurgists feel free to pick this apart:

**Lock it in**I don't mean to brag; but portals did just fine this morning. Probably due to the RK triangulation.... Plus with it being 25° we were at 27lbs. Hitting Costco speed bumps this afternoon probably. I'll report on any issues.![]()
Not gonna lie - that's a badass looking rig! Nicely done asthetics. And even with all the less than stellar reviews, I'm still saving beer cans to pay for my future portals...I don't mean to brag; but portals did just fine this morning. Comparison testing off road delayed a tad due to breakageSo whats the consensus, Werewolf or 74Weld?![]()
Allegedly quin asked the owner of the second housing break to not share any photos as a favor, insinuating that favors would be returned. Social media peeps with big accounts get taken care of immediately and parts overnighted to them. They definitely try to prevent problems from seeing the light of day and DO NOT like it when anyone says anything. Is it me or is it hard to find discussions of recent 74weld portal issues, outside of this thread. I tried a simple search on Youtube and Google and only posts from this forum...this thread specifically...pops up. You would think someone would be making some kind of video on youtube, right? I don't even see any toyota forum posts show up on google search...nothing recent at least.
Oh, and a hilarious update-quin is now saying the front brackets were designed to be different sizes and nothing was wrong with them. Despite telling another portal customer that they outsourced that project, the third party fucked up, and they never double checked the specs before installing them. Now he’s saying they were sold counterfeit loctite and that’s why they were loosening. Must’ve been a pretty extensive problem as I bought loctite 263 from the local auto parts store and it didn’t work on that smaller bracket either.Allegedly quin asked the owner of the second housing break to not share any photos as a favor, insinuating that favors would be returned.
