I did a ton of research and found another thread around here that sort of did the same thing I wanted (although they reinforced it a bit more - can't find the thread now, though ... sorry!)

But here's how it all turned out and really happy with it! I was able to load both kayaks myself and unload both myself with the wheels. Even at 5'11", I had to keep the tie down on the back and use that as leverage to pull the kayak out a bit before I could get enough leverage to tip it down. I do have some old pads that went around the crossbars of my old one I put on the very last rail to just use for resting it there before getting situated to push it up. No issues with hitting the glass, or even having the 'tire in the way'. Tried it both with the gate open (window down) and gate closed and honestly, liked it with the tailgate closed more since I could rest on the tire if needed.

But the SweetRoll thing is super easy to use, even on a '22 Wildtrak with the extra height of the tires, @TrailRax, and the extra height of the bars.

Rack: TrailRax 4 door with Pax Rax

Plus I have the reinforcements on the TrailRax

Yakima Parts:
  • Yakima Landing Pad 26 (this comes with a long bracket that can attach directly to the rack itself)
  • Yakima Skyline Towers
  • Yakima 70" JetStream Crossbars (luckily had these from old car)
  • Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Carriers (so rad!)
  • Yakima Paddle Holders (these are definitely not necessary, but pretty great and easy to use, I just got them since I was on a spending spree getting this set up with all the new parts). I did have to mount these directly to the rack, since where I placed the bars are so far apart, the paddle really wouldn't work on 'the aerobar' at that distance.
  • Bunch of straps I had from previous stuff to tie down

I went on a quick HWY run getting up to about 75-80 and you can hear some wind at the front but was super stable all around. No movement. I will probably try and see if I can pull them a 'bit back' so it's more angled 'down' and try another run to see if I can get that draft sound down ... but I'm kind of used to it since on my old car (Mazda CX-9) they front stuck waaaay out and we just got used to it.

Oh, the BEST PART! With just 4 key unlocks and a flip of those towers, you can take the whole setup off in a couple minutes since I can't use my topbox and gear boxes (camping stuff) with all that kayak nonsense up there and the Landing Pads have a cover so you just place it over and it's just 4 little bumps on the rack when off. Much better then the J-Low carriers I had where I had to remove each carrier piece from the bar itself. I will see if I can update some more pics with it off and the bars for those curious.

Another note, I was able to get a 12' Yakima Skybox on the TrailRax without any extra hardware ... went straight to the bars that was placed (no bars removed also, as I saw some people had to do that with the Thule - unsure about all Thules, but the Yakima I have is flat on the bottom).

Quick edit: The kayaks are the Perception Pescador 12.0 , the Bronco is all stock outside of racks, mudflaps, and some other internal things.

Just looks like so many levels of air being so high off the rack.

Looks good though,... and expensive

It was! I do appreciate all your information, also. It's what led me to make my (first) post here, for others searching who may want to do the same. This forum has been super helpful for me.

Yeah, kayak racks are usually all like that unless your leashed directly to the bars itself (like most do with canoes), with the J-Low on my car, it was about 5-6" since the roof rails were raised above and the extra height of the J-Low carrier, with this, it's about 2-3" more, I think. But, they also sit flat, not sideways, so oddly enough I'm at about the same height I was hauling them on this vs the Mazda.

This was my older setup:

Regarding cost ... yeah, it is. But I also roll with the buy once, cry once mentality. Most racks didn't allow the removal of the top sections and that was key for me. It did hurt buying some of the parts, but a lot of it I bought used through Re-rack PDX (a local reseller/used stuff for roof top stop like Thule and Yakima). The only thing I think I paid full retail for was the rack (10% off) and the landing pads since I couldn't find used ones anywhere.

Bonus shot of the rails removed (about 1 minute to remove each):

That opposed to DIY and cry later?...lol, not my PT Cruser, just an internet pic.

I'll try the down low on rack first and see about some of the other bits for some yak events in the spring. On my truck I just had a rack with eye-hooks and tie-down points, but I also want to be able to take the front roof off easy.

Oh man, that PT with those racks. But ya know? They are out doing it, just wouldn't ride behind them!

And yeah, before I opted for the Bronco I was looking at trucks, but I rarely have a need for the bed itself so having the "SUV" of the Bronco has worked out really well.

Our key reason for the rollers is the wife is shorter, so she couldn't reach the J-Lows if I had them attached to the roof rack itself, we did try! Also, I assume if you have lighter kayaks (these are kinda heavy at 60+ lbs) it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

My son and I made the cheap diy kayak rack shown below.

Basically two 2x4s that bolt onto existing threaded holes, some cleats and bicycle inner tubes to hold down the kayaks. Inner tubes work great for that sort of thing.

Downside is the rack only works when the top is off. Upside it's an excuse to take the top off. :)

I did not have much use for the truck bed either and got it broken into (rear BLIS lights stolen). I got the truck in '21 when the Bronco's were going for premium and I could not justify the payments. I traded the truck for a Bronco now as there were good deals. I think this bed-less truck/SUV will work, except the wet cloths in the back. I just need to buy a rack system that can do what I need all over again. Your list is helpful.

My yak is 64lbs, but I can swing it as I am a taller dude.

Stealing this and going try to add to my trailrax. I have two wide fishing kayaks (85# each) that I’ve been trying to figure out how to mimic OP’s option without spending the coin of an additional rack for my rack. I do not want to use j-hooks either. Have heard horror stories about crosswinds and 32” wide boats.

I ended up getting a simple Hooke Road rack to keep costs low. I had two kayaks on mine the other day, one needed to lean up to the other a little for the short ride to my buddies truck. I hate J bars too for wide fishing kayaks, very dangerous in winds and make things tall.

Looks good! Also thought about seeing if I could integrate this for single boat.

The cradles are prefect!

HR rack comes with t-slots in all the across slats. I was looking at a simular wing things on Amazon, but needed a bracket that would get in the way of taking the roof off. These cradles would also allow the yak edges to hang over the rack on the sides to put two side by side.

I thought about rounding off 1x3s to fit in the wide rack openings with O-rings, but this is better!

Kind of what I was thinking. Start with one, see if I can get one side all the way over, see how much over hang there is and how much room I have left. You talked me into it. 🤣 Just bought it.

You should be able to get them close to the edge depending on how your rack is.
Not sure I trust those little bolts though. I'd add another strap or bungees secured on the rack for highway driving.

Definitely! I want any lift going through the rack, not the mounts. I’ll post some pics when I get it installed.
