Where does the lid attach to hinge? The back metal panel or the side metal panels? Reason is I'd like to leave the panel out against the backseat so If I wanted I could detach the lid and lay the seat down easily for hauling. Is this feasible?

Not really. You can’t attach the side walls without the back panel. You also lose the security if your top is off. The side walls don’t attach to the sides of the vehicle, only the floor so it wouldn’t be stable without the back panel.
