I know several have discussed tuning the 2.7L and then news of 10R60 came out. Rated torque could be an issue as suspected. I reached out to 5Star Tuning to get their take on it. This was their response when asked about the torque of the 2.7L already being close to the rated torque of the 10R60.

We aren't sure yet. We have not received our Bronco's yet. We aren't even sure they will be supported. We can cap the torque to make sure it does not exceed the recommended numbers. We have to do that with the Ecoboost Mustangs because they aren't rated for anything above 500 ft/lbs of torque.

I'm really surprised they have to limit the torque that much on the 10R60. I beat the heck out of the 10R80 in my F150 and it just seems to take it in stride. Even with 750+ hp, AWD launches, and a super extreme racing tune from OZ Tuning, the 10R80 keeps surprising me.

And yet here we are, 2.7 tune may NOT be available because of the trans!

So like I said 18 months ago, I'll say it again... All I want is a V8 šŸ˜

I didnā€™t pay much attention to the 10R60 whining, I donā€™t really care I trust Ford will build a capable SUV and have no plans to tune it to a race car. But after driving a 2.7 I suspected they may be limiting the trans on take off. Itā€™s kind of a dog off the line, I know the 2.7 is capable of more. Interested to see how this turns out once tuners get them on the dyno and let us know whatā€™s going on.

Yup. Many people have tried to warn about this in the past, but they got dismissed each time. Now itā€™s even been officially confirmed, but people still donā€™t want to believe it.

ā€œBronco Brand Manager Esteban Plaza-Jennings told BN that the 10R60 is more than capable of handling the Broncoā€™s power output, as the trans is rated at 406lb-ft with the 2.3L engine and 424lb-ft with the 2.7L engine. For reference, the 2.3L engine is projected to produce 310lb-ft of torque, while the 2.7L will produce 400lb-ft.ā€

Thatā€™s because the 10R80 is rated for almost 600 lb-ft of torque. The 10R60 is only rated for a little over 400 lb-ft.

I have used Mike@5star to tune many trucks for me over the past 10 or so years. One thing for sure they will leave all of Ford's safeguards in place so you have a safe tune

It just means that the 10R60 is going to need some upgrades... or a swap to a 10R80 depending on what is more practical.

Those of us at higher elevations dont get the hp and torque you guys get at sea level....So even with a tune, I'd guess we still dont have the power you guys have at sea level stock...Bring on the tunes!!!

I just love the fact that for the last year and a half I've butt heads with the turbo group. Telling me how great these little turbos are, how they can be tuned to numbers that blew away (old 1990) V8's...
A 1990 Corvette had a 5.7L v8 that made a whopping 245hp, at the *crank*
My 2010 GTI with 2.0L I-4, a conservative tune and a factory turbo makes 250, at the *wheels*. A small turbo upgrade puts that to 320ish, and a big turbo upgrade puts it to upwards of 400+.

And even at the highest level, it probably gets double the mileage that the vette does.

I like v-8's too man, but time marched on, evolve or die.

Believe it or not, these EcoBoost engines donā€™t lose much power at higher elevations. The turbos counter the difference in air pressure.

Why would that matter if it's still backed by the 10r60? Get back to the trip-state , people out here are scary.

Once again the same story as before. How about people compare current engines. What's the current hp for a vette now? Aren't Mustangs in the low 400's? What's baby Godzilla put out?

And secondly, 18 MPG? Seriously? My 2012 Mustang V6, hooked up to a 6 speed with 305 hp, gets 25+ MPG and NO turbo lag. It also has 221k miles on it, which I've only replaced tie rods and a thermostat. Will your turbos last that long? I sure hope so.

Yes we all know the aerodynamics and whatnot, but where are the benefits of your little turbo?

On a side note, I'm going to guess the current vette must be using a little 4 banger turbo now huh?
