Hey everyone! My wife and I will be moving from OKC to Denver in the next few months. She got a great job up there, I'm working on a few offers this week myself - we're excited to get there and get settled in!

I had waffled on my Bronco - buying a $60k off-roading SUV didn't make a ton of sense here. Not many places to off-road, no overlanding camping spots, etc. So I was going to buy a cool old Scout or Land Cruiser and fix it up, keeping my Tacoma in the meantime.

But moving to Denver, a Bronco makes sense. The problem is my Tacoma no longer makes sense. It's really nice - 2009 SR5 PreRunner TRD Off-Road Access Cab with low miles BUT it's RWD. Which means nearly zero resale value/interest in Denver.

So I'm going to sell it here before we move. But I want to buy something here to take with us so I can commute to work (if needed, lots of remote options) and that I can sell when I get my Bronco (likely 2022 MY).

4WD/AWD doesn't command a premium down here like it does up there so I figure I could drive it for free or maybe even make a profit. And I'm not sure I wanna pay cash for it (would rather save cash as a down payment for a house or for all the stuff we're going to need as a result of moving) or finance it (and risk the credit hit right before applying for a mortgage).

What are good options that would re-sell quickly up there? I don't want another 3 row AWD SUV - We have an MDX. So I want something kind of different/unique. Maybe a Crosstrek with some AT's on it or a 4Runner with a lift or a Land Cruiser. Any thoughts? I know neither of those are unique in Denver but they are here. Would really love something we can take off-road - oh, and I won't buy a Wrangler!

If you found a nice classic FJ-40 or shoebox Bronco in Oklahoma you could make a profit or at least break even when you go to sell it in Colorado. There is high demand for those vehicles in that area but many have rust damage from the salt used in the winter.

There's a few older FJ's available around here, very few Broncos. And almost all of those are out of my price range. Plenty of FJ Cruisers available though.

Your plan to sell the RWD Taco before moving to Denver is a good one.

I’d say buy an alternate vehicle before you move, anything reasonable capable or mountain lifestyle friendly commands a higher resale around here IMPO.

my Taco will be going up for sale very very soon. I don’t anticipate any trouble selling it.

good luck on your journey!

Awesome rig! That's almost exactly what I'd be looking for but I'm sure you're over my budget on that, good luck with the sale.

I have yet to find someone who thinks I should keep the Taco up in Denver. There will be little to no market for it and I will have no trouble selling here.

I figure anything with AWD or 4WD should resell well up there, even more so if it's had some mods done to it to enhance capabilty, thanks for confirming that as well.

Thanks it’s been a great truck, way too many mods to list. It’s a legit warrior. I have some routine maintenance and a few minor repairs scheduled (new windshield, etc) and then it’s going up for sale ASAP.

Mods don’t always add resale value, so be careful with that, but they do create some gravity. Adventure trucks built like mine are pretty hot right now around here, especially Tacoma’s. I’m going to regret selling it but I have a plan.

Subaru’s are pretty popular around here, same with AWD small crossovers / SUV’s. They’re everywhere. Otherwise it’s Tacoma’s 4Runners, Jeeps, Tundra’s, luxury SUV’s, and I’m starting to see more Chevy Colorado’s all built out.

I needed a 4x4 for a couple years before my move from Michigan to Hawai’i and a bridge vehicle til the purchase of my new Bronco. So I found a all original XJ Cherokee from the original owner. I constantly get asked if I want to sell it and two random people gave me their phone numbers even after saying I wasn’t selling it for over a year lol. The Jeep is super compact at only 167” and easy to work on. All I did was put an original upcountry suspension package on it thus keeping my investment low, I will actually make money off this vehicle when I go to sell it. Another good, small, and very reliable 4x4 is a Honda Element. Had one for many years that I used to take on all kinds of Moderate 4 x 4 trails and it was a great toy hauler for mountain bikes and kayaks.

Anything Toyota will sell at a premium. Just check out KBB vs autotrader prices on the 4Runner and Tacoma. The Colorado "Toyota tax" is a real thing. Jeeps will sell well too.

Less popular but still a good option would be Nissans (Xterra/Frontier).

I see Ford/GM pickups around but I don't get the sense that they're high demand items. You could probably sell them pretty easy.

My opinion is that's pretty sweet.
But for 7k there had better be some SUBSTANTIAL investment to make it worth that.
And besides the lined exterior and a lift, I don't see anything more valuable or well maintained than a $2500 one around here.
No meat left on the bone there for profit/resale/breaking even.
At least in the market where I am.
The supposed $7k they spent at offroad addiction amounts to $2500 for linex on the outside, about $2k on shocks, tires and installation of such, and around $1500 for fender flares and installation. Not much listed there in terms of supporting mods.

I'd walk in and offer $4k as it sits as long as it runs well but I don't think I'd get very far in negotiations. I might send that offer and see how it goes!

Looking at some older 4Runners I could drop $5k on, throw on some AT's and be happy with. I do also LOVE the idea of an XTerra.

I love the idea of a 2D Cherokee or an Element, those things are cool as heck!

I wheeled the hell out of my Xterra until I sold it last fall. I think the 2nd gen is just the right size and power for off-road use.
