Yeah I would never buy a new diesel. Too much regulation. Im not a diesel guy(and im a cdl holder). But if I were to buy one it would be and built 7.3 or a cummins. But then again what can I actually do with a light duty diesel that I can do with a 460?
im looking at tow ratings, unfortunately I may be stuck with having to go with a 250. figure, I need to be able to tow the 82 bronco, after a 1-ton SAS, and 44s, and likely with some gear. So figuring 6500#s plus the trailer. and it seems that the best tow optioned 96 F-150s (last year I'd buy one) has a tow rating of 8k max. and I don't want to do so many mods that I may as well have just bought a 250, like swapping out to a 460 (did that in the Bronco), or swapping out 1 tons (again, that is what the Bronco is for....). And I don't really want to have to drive a friggen land yacht that all the non-regular cab 250s were prior to the 97/98 update w/ SCrew cab short beds.

I'm finding early 90s 150s for 20k...its crazy. I have my eye on a few that need a little bit of work in the 3-4k range, and I happen to have all the parts and tools to do that work, and being an older truck, I actually can do that work vs a newer one.
That is crazy money for a 30 year old truck. Wow.

the bronco price is beyond stupid.
the F-1 price would be reasonable if it were a restomod (upgraded suspension, brakes, newer motor with more than 75hp...), not a barely use-able on today's roads true restoration. Then again, I am not a trailer queen kinda guy, I see very little appeal is having a show car you can't drive outside of museum/educational purposes.

How about an early super duty gas truck? 5.4 or V10. Should tow pretty good.

Unfortunately no, I'm wanting to avoid modulars as well just because I want something that I can pull out, rebuild, and put back in in a weekend for a few hundred dollars. 302s, 351s, and 460s. The only exception might be a fairly stock 7.3 truck.

Tough crowd. Ok, so my recommendation is 7.3idi in 88-94 F250. Had one, great engine, just a little low on power from the factory but turbo chargers fix that!

that is definitely on the table. and a superduty with the 7.3 powerstroke is as well. basically, looking for anything 75ish -96, and 250/350 w/ 7.3 97-2003. 4x4 (I use this rather often), and not outrageously lifted or trashed or abused, this will be a tow truck/work truck and reliability is more important than looking like a bad ass. (I mean, a 2" lift or leveling kit on 33s/34s or similiar isn't an issue....but an 8" lift on 40s etc...yeah not this go around.)

All good choices. I’d also throw a recommendation for a 300 6 cylinder in an F250. Again, low on power but reliable. I’d also like to see a turbo on that engine! :)

that one's a bit too slow for me. granted, you can't break u-joints or gears that way! I do like the 300 though, one of the trucks I am looking at has it, granted I'd likely swap it out sooner rather than later.

If it weren't a 4x2, I'd have a line on the truck for you: https://www.libertytrucksales.net/details/used-1996-ford-f-350/65577084

I nearly drool every time I drive past that thing on the way to or home from work. But I don't need a 1-ton, even if that thing does have about 20k fewer miles than my 2011 Tundra.

300 I6 is such a cool power plant... IMO it’s what the modern Bronco should’ve come with. (The Australian I6 not the old one they’ve discontinued)

2.7 will work too though.

Turbo 300s do have some balls though. There was a Maverick trying to break into the 9s with one i car craft a few years ago.
