Scout was a cool vehicle, my uncle Joe had one. Hopefully they make it true to its heritage and somewhat capable at least and safe

Recent news has Volkswagen starting an American based branch to make a new EV version of the Scout.
These have any interesting history and look very similar to the old broncos IMO. They were originally build by American Harvestter! Here is an article and some pictures. What do you think? Seems very intriguing. I think VW could be on to something and they could pull it off. I’m keeping my eye on this one over the next few years.

More likely just another Land Rover competitor with the ability to go across the curb-stops at Starbucks to cut in line.

Looks more like a Rivian to me.

I had a 67 IH Scout that I really loved. But ended up selling it as it became a money pit. Sounds like Volkswagen which has the Scout brand now is considering bringing it back. Mine had a feature that you don't see much anymore that was really cool. A twin shift transfer case that you could set to be any of these: real wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, front wheel drive, no wheel drive (neutral). It had a lock out to prevent you from going into rear wheel low and front wheel high at the same time. The benefit of front wheel drive was to be able to pull yourself out of a situation when you did not want a push from the rear wheels. I suppose based on the Bronco roll out disaster it will be a few years off. Maybe it will be an EV version. Hope not.

Actually, The Scout 80 came out 5 years before the Bronco. The Bronco was largely designed to compete with the Scout, Not the other way around like the article suggests...

These early renders look most faithful to the Scout II though, (1971-1980) like I've owned 8 of.

A true Electric Off-Roader that takes full advantage of the possibility of controlling the wheel directions independently has huge potential, if they build it with sturdiness and durability in mind with an Electric "rollerskate" platform, it could be an Awesome Crawler. Sadly, that's a really limited market, and I fear it would not sell well enough to support a company, but if they do it (And Make the top removable) I'll be in line for one!

I think the Defender competitor route is more likely though. :(

A German video (with English subtitles) talking about the new Scout. They at least seem excited about it.

Approach angle looks pretty much 90 deg, but there is a lot of rear overhang.

This is happening for sure. VW NA CEO is the new head for the Scout Electric division.
