What are your thoughts on the use of fuel economy Improving ECM chips?

I never have used one and think that some may be a scam, but would like to know of any thoughts or experience on fuel economy improvement with these chips if any?

I've said it before I'll say it again (in my own experience): with 2.7 SAS on the highway/interstate the RPM threshold is 2300. When I've been at or above that I can watch my MPG drop, and below it gains.

I did a cross country from Florida to Utah and back, trip to North Carolina, all over Florida, at 12k miles now and this still holds true for my rig at least. Obviously headwind plays a huge factor, tire pressure, weight, etc etc but this is certainly just my opinion/observation.

Let me drive it. You won’t have to pay for gas.

I know if you have a bronco you generally don't care to to much about gas mileage.... But what if it was easy to get a bit more out of it? Wouldn't you want to maximize what you could with little effort? This is what I tried At least before I go ruin it all again with the lift. Lol.

So before. Running 33-34 psi in my tires, (Toyo Open Country CT and fuel Shok wheels, about .7lb heavier than the badlands optional wheels that came on it.), And the stock air filter. Running usually around the posted speed limits. Normal driving. 17.8 mpg was my average over about 2500 miles.
The changes, added 5 psi to the tires. Now 38-39psi. Changed out my air filter to the Whipple high flow one, literally easiest filter change ever. Did the tires about a week before changing the air filter this past Saturday morning. Still driving the same if not a little faster on avg. Now averaging 20.2 mpg this month so far.... So I'll keep tracking. We'll see what happens now that gas prices are suddenly shooting for the moon. I'll probably drive nicer and more conservatively as well. Lol

What have you guys done, if anything?! 👀🙃

So I have a bone-stock non-SAS BL with 33” wheels. Been getting 17mpg pretty consistently since new.

Finally took it on a long rod trip and didn’t try to conserve gas and just drove the speed of traffic and was on cruise control most of the time.

Over almost 900 miles my average on 87 unleaded was 19.3 mpg. I thought it would be higher but I didn’t buy it for the mpg.

I also really questioned the reality of people on this forum claiming 23+ mpg since I had never seen anything close to that, including this road trip.

But after a fill up on this trip I thought I would try for max mpg. Over 60 miles I was able to get 23.2 mpg but I had to drive so gingerly, it is total impractical IMO to drive this way but I was able to get 23+ so it is possible.

So I have a lightly modded OBX and when I run my 33.5" mud terrain tires my mpg is shit.

When I run the Flowmaster High Clearance Axle Back exhaust with the much lighter OBX rims and tires, this is the result.

You can doubt it all you want, but I am driving normally (which is not exactly gentle, I put my foot in it to pass). This is driving on I-10, where my goal is to be the second fastest car in the road - someone else can have the ticket.

sometimes my mileage is not as good, but still approaching 23 mpg.

When I snapped the pic, I was in a road construction zone and put it M8 because the exhaust tends to drone in top gear. The rest of the trip was sport mode, 4A, in D, with adaptive cruise control. You can do the math, but my average speed with stops was north of 70 mph (76.5 MPH average including stops, construction, traffic, etc).

Well just finished a tank with eco and auto stop on. Cruise control as much as possible and coasting. It made a difference. This tank got 25.6 mpg on the on board computer and hand 25.55 calculated. Mobil 89 octane. Went 424 miles on this tank, usually in the 350 range. Had I ran it down to E would have eclipsed 500 miles for the tank.

Getting 25.5 mpg at an average speed of 30 mph...

I would not have the patience to drive that slowly.

They got that from the picture of the gauges showing 424.2 miles traveled in 14.3 hours is an overall average speed of 29.66 mph. Obviously unless this was a steady state cruise at that speed it also includes time stopped and time at higher speeds but that averages out to a much lower speed in the end.

Guess that makes sense lol I guess math is math but sure doesn't seem right to me lol. I'm on the highway for 63% of my commute lol

Get a cheap commuter car and drive the Bronco on weekends. I have a VW Jetta that nets me 50-60 MPG on regular cheap 87 octane for my 100 mile a day drive. I love my Bronco but it sits most of the time because I can't afford the gas due to my long commute to work. So my Jetta gets the crap driven out of it and my Bronco only has 1200 miles after owing it 5.5 months.

BTW, it's still really good gas mileage.

As stated above, 14.3 hours and 424 miles traveled according to the Trip 1 with 25.5 MPG average.

424 miles / 14.3 hours = 29.650 MPH average speed. I rounded up to 30 MPH.

Where in my picture Trip 1 shows 306 miles over 4 hours with 22.5 MPG at an average speed of 76.5 MPH.

306 miles / 4 hours = 76.5 MPH
