Sales tax at time of purchase and if you have a trade in the you pay sales tax only on the balance after trade in value is subtracted.

Illinois just changed it so you have to pay sales tax on the trade value also. So dumb.

You have this backwards. As of Jan 1 you only pay tax on the difference. The $10k cap was removed.

OP, no prop tax on vehicles in IL though we pay 11.5% on purchase (minus trade value) in Chicago's Crook County.

Colorado we have what they call an ownership tax…for my 2020 Jeep it was $896.67. This of course goes down with depreciation in value. You incur it every year….

In Oklahoma, tag, title and tax is approx 5.5% of sticker price, not what you paid for the vehicle then about $100 a year there after slowly depreciating about 50 cents each year. I just got the tag for my Street Glide Special yesterday-it was almost $1800. Oh. And there's no adjustment for your trade in.

In VA property tax was expensive BUT being active duty military and being a TX resident didn’t have to pay but if I did have to pay it, would’ve been a shit ton.

In Minnesota, you pay a sales tax on the purchase. Then a registration tax on the license is based on a tax table that you reference with your vehicle value vs the year of the vehicle.

Bronco registration in Minnesota for a $40,200 bronco will be $514 plus a few other local county taxes, like a wheelage tax. A $60k bronco would have a registration tax of $761.

You pay sales tax based on the county and city. So I think I am saving about $300 by choosing a dealer in a lower tax city. I could save another $120 by driving all the way across town, but I'd probably spend at least half that much in gas.

Vehicle license and registration is based on age and presumably value of vehicle. My wife's new F-150 was $465 including $25 for the personalized plate.

Sticker on the 150 was $42k as I recall.

Since I still don't have a Bronco, I don't know what mine will be, but it ought to be around $320 on my base based on the sticker difference between a Base Bronco and an F-150 STX

We have it in NC too, but on the flip side my property tax on my house is like 1/4 what it was in Illinois

Kentucky has a "usage" tax when you initially buy the vehicle. It just so happens to be the same rate as our sales tax. We also pay a yearly tax when registering that's based on the county where you live and the value of the vehicle. I live in metro area so I'm taxed for everything...public transportation, etc.

On the bright-side, the local PVA valued my Bronco for nearly half of what I paid for it last year. So there's that....
